Everyone who owns and drives a vehicle knows that texting and driving is illegal. Although many don’t know the severe risks that could happen while texting and driving and would think that the consequences would never happen to them. Texting and driving leads to at least 330 000 injuries per year according to a study from the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis. Which is absolutely barbaric! So many people hurt for the most unnecessary reasons. Texting drivers are also 23 times more likely to be in an accident then the non-texting drivers and there is a lot of texting drivers, 47 percent of adults say that they text and drive. Next time you hit send , you might just be sent to your death.

According to a study made by the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA), texting while driving is six times more dangerous than drinking and driving. Even though the proportion of alcohol related accidents has dropped 52% in the last 34 years, the proportion of all accidents has increased 78% during the same lapse of time. Because people think that a text can’t be that dangerous, they are way less careful than people who drink and drive, and that leads to a ton of accidents caused by the use of cellphones on the road. Luckily, a survey made by NHTSA showed that 90% of the population wants the law to ban texting while driving. So you have two choices : put down your cellphone and wait to be home to send your text or pay, be it with your money or with your life.

Time to Text

Texting while driving is becoming one of the leading causes of fatalities on the road.

This is related to the time the driver is distracted while looking at his/her device and the distance travelled at high-speeds. In fact, replying to a message or even glancing at it for a moment can set you back 4.6 seconds while driving at a mere 55km/h, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a precious amount of time that causes the difference between life and death. While the quantity of drunk driving incidents have decreased by more than 50% over 30 years, the amount of non-alcohol-related driving incidents have surged, rising an impressive amount of 78% stated on the site www.potsdam.edu. Distracted driving plays an important role in those numbers showing the downside of the popular social device. As a consequence, many are hoping that the government will implement laws to reduce the number of accidents or make it less favorable by increasing the fines related to distracted driving which could go up to 1000$ according to the Star.

So, next time you drive, take the time to silence your phone because a text is not worth your life.

Texting the reaper

When you take your driving classes in Quebec, the first thing the teacher talks about is how bad texting and driving is. Do you think they do this because they have nothing else to talk about? Texting and driving is a real problem with teenagers these days. According to the Harvard Center of Risk Analysis study, 300 000 injuries, 300 of those being death, are due to using a cellular device while holding the wheel. Can you believe that? Studies show that you are 23 times more likely to be injured when texting than if you have complete attention to the road². According to federal reports, looking down at your phone for a text takes 4.6 seconds. That doesn’t seem like much, but when you are rolling at 55 mph, that’s the length of driving through a football field. Next time you are driving to your friend’s house, don’t text them where you are, because you might be texting the reaper.

²: http://www2potsdam.edu/alcohol/files/driving-while-texting-six-times-more-dangerous-than-driving-while-drunk.html#.VLWQmyuG-Sp

Texting + driving = a not so good combination

Did it ever happen to you that you were driving peacefully in your car and you suddenly received a text message? Even if you know that answering immediately is wrong, the feeling is stronger than you and you have to answer. Don’t worry you are not alone, but this behavior can lead to multiple deaths and injuries. If we take a look at some Harvard studies from the Center for Risk Analysis study, each year there is more than 3 000 deaths and 330 000 injuries related to text and driving. This unbounded number made text driving the number one cause of accidents involving the most deaths and injuries on the road. If you take out your phone and start texting while driving you are putting yourself in a situation that gives you 23 times more chances to be implicated in a car accident. Would you take the chance of letting a text message decide on your future?

Just imagine you are driving and you receive a text from your friend about what you will do this night with him. Will you be tempted to read the text and answer it? Yes, you will and looking at your phone will take your eyes from the road for 4,6 seconds which is on the highway, the equivalence of 109 meters, states the federal agency. Can you imagine how huge that is and how many cars you can pass by?

People using their phones on the road now have to face consequences such as fines and demerit points.

A Price to Pay

Distracted driving is now the number one cause of automobile accidents on the road, but even if you make it out alive, are the fines that pile up worth it? Currently in Ontario, according to the Toronto Star, texting while driving can lead to fines going as high as 500$. However, Ontario Transport Minister Steven Del Duca plans to introduce a bill that would not only double the fines, but also add three demerit points to the driver's license, in an effort to, according to him, reduce the amount of distracted driving-related accidents. Do you really want to pay that much for something that can be so easily avoided? Additionally, staying out of accidents doesn't mean staying out of paying. Vince Hawkes, an O.P.P. Commissioner, stated in a 2014 Toronto Sun article that officers would be scouring important highways during a busy weekend, in order to crack down on distracted driving. So think about it, even if you consider yourself a pro multitasker that can easily handle texting and driving, you'll be paying soon enough, one way or another.

Drunk driving is very publicised in our society, but texting while driving isn’t even though it’s the leading cause in car accidents. According to a Harvard for risk Analysis study, texting while driving causes more than 3,000 deaths and 330,000 injuries every year (From the article: Driving while Texting Sic Times More Dangerous that Driving while Drunk). That’s way more than victims of drunk driving! Today, the proportion of alcohol-related car accidents are at an all time low, however, the number of non alcohol related accidents has spiked by 78% since 1982. We work so hard to prevent drunk driving, but almost nothing is done for texting while driving. The awareness of texting and driving is so low that most people don’t know how bad the situation truly is. With 80% of drivers supporting laws restrict cell phone usage while driving, hopefully governments can take these ideas and develops them to protect drivers.

The fines that the police officers give to people for texting and driving are so small and without any real consequence that almost no one is dissuaded from doing it. However, the Ontario Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca aims to raises the amount of the fines to 1,000$ and three demerit points. He wishes to adopt this law as quickly as possible to prevent the biggest amount of deaths due to texting while driving. The bill, previously between 50$ and 600$, would now range between 300$ and 1,000$. Also, three demerits will be taken away, instead of none. According to Vince Hawks, Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner, 78 deaths where connected to distracted driving as opposed to 54 death caused by impaired driving. Compared to other provinces, in Quebec, fines range in between 115$ to 154 $ with three demerits and in Alberta it’s 172$ with no points (From: Texting while driving could lead to a 1,000$ fine, 3 demerits). Hopefully, the increase in the cost of fines will dissuade drivers to text and drive. It might save their life.

Driving while under influence is the cause of many accidents throughout the world. However recently, texting while driving has passed the former in the number of accidents caused. Texting while driving is a dangerous act that can lead to heavy consequences. According to a study by Harvard Center for Risk Analysis, over 3000 deaths and 330 000 injuries are caused by texting while operating a vehicle. However, this problem isn’t just seen in teens since 47% of adult drivers admit to texting while driving. This is a very important problem since it compromises the security of our streets and by texting while driving we risk our own lives and also those of other citizens who drive on the same roads as us. For example, According to Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner Vince Hawkes accidents related to text driving caused the death of 78 people, that is 19 more people than accidents caused by drunk driving. Now that the situation has been explained, it is up to you to decide if you want to risk your lives and those of others by being distracting by your phone.

DMing Death

Texting and driving is definitely more dangerous than drunk driving, and we are now realizing the extent of danger that this new epidemic creates. Texting and driving kills 3000 people a year, according to a Study by the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis. In comparison,9967 people have been killed by drunk driving, according to a study carried out by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)(2014). However, these numbers do not tell the whole story. The amount of fatalities linked to drunk driving have dropped 52% in the past 35 years, an all time low, while the amount of non alcohol related deaths has gone up 78% in the same time period, according to the English Document. Texting and driving is clearly a major problem in our society, and only seems to be getting worse, just as drunk driving seems to be going down.I think this is a consequence of states giving more attention to drunk driving and handing down harsher penalties. If texting and driving is six times1 more dangerous than drunk driving, why aren’t there more ads about it,more awareness for the victims and a higher penalty for committing this crime?

1 https://www.alcoholproblemsandsolutions.org/files/Driving-while-Texting-Six-Times-More-Dangerous-than-Driving-while-Drunk.html

With drunk driving accidents being halved in the past 30 years according to a Harvard center risk analysis study, we cannot say the same for cellular-caused accidents. In fact, accidents not related to alcohol have jumped by an astounding 78% becoming the single highest reason for fatal car accidents (Potsdam, driving while texting six times more dangerous than driving while drunk). Measures are being taken by the Ontario government to help circumvent the problem, they are increasing the penalties for drivers that text to 1000$ in fines and 3 demerit points. “By comparison, in British Columbia, fines are up to $167 plus three demerit points; in Alberta it’s $172 with no demerit points; in Quebec, it’s between $115 to $154 and three points; and in new Brunswick, it’s $172.50 and three points.” (the star, texting while driving could lead to $1,000 fine, 3 demerits) In fact, a survey run by NHTSA questioning drivers if they were in accord with there being laws to ban texting and driving, shows that 80% of drivers are in agreement and three quarters of the surveyed audience believe that the ban should affect everyone indiscriminately of their age group (Potsdam, driving while texting six times more dangerous than driving while drunk).

Driving is an activity that requires skill, concentration and patience, but with this new generation revolving around technology, concentrating when on the road can be a difficult task for teenagers that tend to have a lack of a patience when it comes to looking at their phones. Many teenagers will text while in front of the steering wheel, but do not encounter the many possibilities that come with it, such as severe consequences revolving around the driver or the perimeter near the car. All we hear about is drunk driving and the negative affect of it but the dangers of drinking are so slim compared to texting. You may not be drunk, but mobile phones are the new source of intoxication for a driver, it is becoming a sort of addiction for the driver to check his phone on a regular basis, and with statistics proving that texting while driving is 6 times more severe than drunk driving isn’t even a surprise to our eyes anymore. As innocent as texting and driving sounds, it is a huge problem for drivers and according to a Harvard Center for Risk Analysis study, it has caused over 3000 deaths and over 330 000 injuries in the last year, pretty shocking isn’t it? Once your eyes are locked on to your screen, your road vision has fully disappeared and during that short period of time, something may happen. Concentration is key for a driver and it is very important to always keep your eye on the road, but once you stop looking in front of you, an accident may happen. It is not assured that you will crash if you look at your phone, but it sure wouldn’t be a surprise if you received a fine from a police officer. In the 416 district, officers have given over 55 000 fines to drivers in use of cellular devices, I mean it does make sense considering that your putting your life and others around you in danger due to a little phone. The road is the most dangerous place to be where the most incidents happen, make sure you are cautious at all time, because you may never know when your life can be put to a stop, as much as you know you can be texting your final goodbye.

We never thought that typing on a small screen can cause the end of a life. Consequently, people don’t realize the cos of texting and driving. Sometimes a simple text can take the life of an innocent teenager. According to a Harvard Center for Risk Analysis study, more than 3,000 deaths and 330,000 injuries were caused by individuals who take the decision of texting and driving. Can you believe that? They also report that about 47% of adults will therefore confess that they’ll text while driving. Also, according to the federal agency, when a driver decides to send a text, his eyes will then be 4,6 seconds away from the street. Is really a text message more important than taking your last breathe?

Texting 666:

The dangers of texting while driving.

While texting can, in modern day society, make us feel connected with the whole world by a simple click, texting while driving truly connects us to death and pain, as its consequences on your driving skills take you 23 times closer to the crash, may it be final. Is it really worth the risk? According to a study by Harvard Center of Risk Analysis, it certainly is not, as every year, this scourge of the road causes over 3,000 deaths and 330,000 injuries! Apparently, a lot of people think that these fatalist statistics do not concern them as they believe in their abilities. The thing is, that during the last 35 years or so, the proportion of traffic accident fatalities unrelated to drunk-driving have jumped a disastrous 78%, demonstrating the pandemic effects of texting while driving. Now if you think you are immune to crashes by doing so, you still lose as new legislations brought up texting and driving fines up to a thousand dollars, coupled with 3 demerits. Best not to get caught then. Overall, it becomes certain that texting while driving is just a dare with the devil, which we all know to turn out quite badly for us humans. So think of it twice before grabbing your cell phone next time you are driving, it may be your last words.

By Anthony Swaelens

As texting and driving is becoming a serious issue, the governments are trying to adjust their fines for texting and driving. In an interview by Robert Benzie with Ontario’s minister of transportation, Steven Del Duca, the minister claims he supports fines that could reach a massive amount of $1,000! Isn’t that an expensive small text message? Furthermore, Minister Del Duca wants to change the current texting and driving minimum fine to $300, which is twice more than the Quebec fines for example. The Harvard Center of Risk Analysis claims that not only teenagers are guilty, since 47% of adults have admitted texting while driving, which means the fines shouldn’t only aim the teenagers. Ultimately, is it preferable to answer your text later, or answer the bank’s text confirming the $1000 withdrawal?

Important or not, a text message should never be opened while driving. Which one is more valuable, your life or a message? The answer is obvious, yet people seem to overlook this principle. No matter how good people think they are at multitasking, texting drivers are more likely to die. In fact, according to the website Potsdam.edu, texting and driving multiplies the chance of being in a car crash by 23. Even sending a small message may lead to a major increase in danger. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that a single message may take a driver’s eyes more than 4.6 seconds off the road, which is the same as driving the distance of a football field at 55 mph. Every year, 3 000 deaths and 330 000 injuries result from texting drivers, based on data recorded from a Harvard Center for Risk Analysis study. The simple truth is that humans cannot keep their eyes on the road and their phone at the same time, and attempting to multitask while driving will undoubtedly carry dangerous consequences, and in the worst scenario, death.

This statistic from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) demonstrates that the dangers of operating a vehicle while texting have surpassed those while driving drunk. In fact, texting while driving has become the main cause of death related accidents on the road. In an article appearing in the Toronto Star, Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner Vince Hawkes reinforces the grave consequences of driving and texting by stating “Distracted-driving deaths have surpassed those caused by impaired driving” and “It is a huge loss of life. It is such a waste. It’s one of those things it is frustrating to see.” According to the article Driving while Texting Six Times More Dangerous than Driving while Drunk, since 1982, the number of deaths caused by alcohol induced car accidents has dropped to an all-time low. However, the amount of fatal non-alcohol-related accidents has risen by 78%. While drunk driving is known to be extremely dangerous, many underestimate the dangers of texting and driving. In fact, according to a study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which was mentioned in the article Driving while Texting Six Times More Dangerous than Driving Drunk, the risks relative to texting while driving are six times higher than the ones of driving intoxicated. If you would never consider driving drunk, why would you even think about picking up your phone while trying to concentrate on the road? Sadly, teens and adults all over the world still underestimate the dangers of texting and driving. According to a Harvard Center for Risk Analysis study, 47% of adults said they text will driving, multiplying the risk of having a car crash by 23 times! How does almost half of the population admit to such a dangerous act? Speaking of which, this dangerous act also leads to severe consequences, and not only health-wise. In the article Texting while driving could lead to $1,000 fine, 3 demerits, it is made clear that the law does not forgive cellphone usage on the road. While some countries penalise less than others, the fine for texting and driving can go up to $1,000. Wouldn’t you regret having a car crash or a thousand dollar fine much more than regretting not answering that text? Probably. So beware, because next time you reach out for your phone while driving, you might be also be reaching your last seconds alive.

Nicolas Ciarallo

You’re speeding down the highway, no cars in sight. As you receive a message on your smartphone, you glance down to see who wrote you. What could 4 seconds change when you’ve got the whole highway to yourself? And either way, you’re a teenager. You’re practically invincible, right? It seems the cop you just passed disagrees.

Penalties for being caught texting while driving are becoming pretty severe. While not as scary as the possibility of losing your life on these roads, the threat of losing the newly-earned licence you worked on for the past year is still a big deterring factor.

As texting-while-driving related charges increase as the years go by, with an increase of 3000 charges a year according to the OPP, it is not surprising the government is starting to cut back. This equates to 19 000 charges in 2013, up from 16 000 charges in 2012

With the highest cause of accident in the country, surpassing even drunk driving according to OPP commissioner Vince Hawkes, texting while driving is also the biggest killer on the roads today, causing the increase in penalties for getting caught.

Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca is confident these new penalties will serve to reduce the amount of charges on Canadian roads. The thousand-dollar fine as well as the 3 demerit points might be enough to scare most teenagers. If anything, it will serve as a reminder to those who got caught.

If these measures lead to any drastic changes remains to be seen, but there is hope.

Last text
In Canada, you can get your driver’s licences at the age of 16. Usually at that same age, teenagers also have smartphones and they are on it 24/7, checking social media or texting their friends. Nothing stops them to use it while driving and that could lead to major consequences. Studies conducted by Harvard Center for Risk Analysis conclude while texting in a vehicle causes over 3,000 deaths and 330,000 injuries per year. That’s a huge amount of deaths and injuries in a short amount of time. Also, according to postdam.edu, none alcohol related deaths have increased by 78% while alcohol related deaths have decreased by 52%. We focus so much on drunk driving that we didn’t realize the dangers of texting while driving. These drivers do want to make a difference, a survey by NHTSA showed that 90% of the drivers want texting while driving to be banned so it could be safer on the roads. Watch out because your phone can kill you too.

Make Driving Safe Again

Lyle, a good honest hardworking Christian family man, was driving back late from his job at Great American Oil Refinery of Alamo, Texas. Having laid off the moonshine since ‘08, Lyle was an exemplary american citizen. He was on his way to the Alamo Baptist Church, when his good ole trusty Motorola buzzed. He peeked at the screen and, lo and behold, there was a new tweet from @realDonaldTrump. He couldn’t resist the temptation of reading The Donald’s 140 character work of literature. He began to read the tweet : ‘’No wonder the crooked Hillary… ‘’ His rusty ‘72 Ford F-150 hit a wall of concrete built by none other than his great President Donald Trump. America is great again.

Marcus is just one out of the few thousand people that are made victims of deadly road accidents every year. Think about it. The consequences of texting on the road probably affected not only Marcus himself, but also the friend he was trying to text as well as his entourage. Everyone ends up suffering. Unfortunately, humans feel so often rushed, like they’re running out of time, why decide time’s already up?

Marcus’s poor decision brought him to his death. Texting and driving should be eliminated nonetheless the situated you’re involved in. Picking up your phone while you drive can lead you to a heartbreaking death, such as Marcus’ accident. Using hands free or Bluetooth would have been a wiser decision. Instead of seeing his friend in a few minutes, he saw his life disappear in a few seconds.

Instead of feeling the need to socialize while stressed, Marcus should have focused his concentration on the road in order to arrive safely at school. Think about it. His death could have been prevented if he knew the consequences of his actions or if he had left earlier. Next time you feel the urge to text, understand the effects i twill have on your driving or text your friends beforehand.

He must've called a thousand times, to tell him, he's worried. Marcus' friend was worried sick about him. He wanted to reach him and ask him when he was going to come to class. But how was his friend going to react when he found out about what happened? By texting and driving, not only are you putting your own life at risk, but you're jeopardizing the emotional well-being of those dear to you. Think about it, is it even necessary to tell your friend you're going to be late if it means you won't show up at all? Marcus's phone rings, but all he can do is say hello from the other side.
