The digestive system begins in your mouth. The teeth crush the food and mix it with saliva.
As you swallow, the food goes down a tube called the esophagus. This tube goes into your stomach. More liquids and chemicals (gastric juices) help digest the food in the stomach.
After the food has been ground and mixed in the stomach, it moves to the intestines.
In the small intestine the food mixes with bile from the liver. The pieces of food become very small; too small to see. These very small pieces are called nutrients and are absorbed into the blood. The blood carries these nutrients to all parts of the body.
Then, waste passes through the large intestine. The waste is called feaces. Feaces leave the body through anus.
The liquids the body does not use are also carried away. Blood carries good nutrients and waste through the body. The waste goes through two organs called the kidneys. The kidneys help clean the blood. The watery liquid not used is called urine. The urine goes into a little bag called the bladder. Urine leaves the bladder when it is pushed out of the bladder through a tube called the urethra.

FUNNY FACTS!

The intestines are very long. If you stretch them out, they would be longer than you are tall. Adults intestines are almost twenty-seven feet long!

Our salivary glands produce around 1.5 litres of saliva each day!

Once swallowed (food) travels down through the esophagus to the stomach, taking about 7 seconds to get there!

The adult stomach has a very small volume when empty but can expand to hold up to 1.5 litres of food when full!

The average human being has over 400 different species of bacteria in their colon!

The liver has over 500 different functions, one of which is producing bile to break down digestive fats!
