Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of using social indicators to measure human development. (Terue)

There are several social indicators which countries use to measure human development. One of the well-known indicators is the Human Development Index (HDI). This measures the country’s development from a social and economic aspect. Since HDI is a composite measure which includes the indicator of health, education, and wealth, it is said to be more reliable than a single index. In addition, education and health are said to be an important aspect to measure the development of the country, therefore, including these two aspects as one of the indicator makes HDI a reliable index. However, the data used for these indicators are all averaged data for each country. By averaging the data, the extremes do not appear on the results which hide the disparities in the country. Furthermore, it is said to be that there are other important indicators which are necessary to measure the development of the country, such as environmental indicators and indicator which represents the human rights or gender disparities. Another common indicator to measure the development is the Gender Inequality Index (GII). This measure displays the level of gender inequality in the country with 0 meaning there is no gender inequality and 1 being very highly unequal between male and female. The advantage of this measure is that it uses several indicators similarly to the HDI, it is said to be more reliable than a single indicator. Also, this indicator clearly contrasts the level of inequality between the countries, therefore, it helps the country to have definite targets or policies to improve the situation. On the other hand, this indicator has a negative quality, which is that the indicator only considers the percentage of the parliamentary seats occupied by the female and does not take into account the other job such as construction workers or a female who works at home to do housework and childcare. Moreover, GII does not include an indicator of violence against women, therefore, it can be said that GII is not fully representing what it is supposed to represent. Lastly, there is another indicator which measures the happiness of the country’s population. It is called a Gross National Happiness Index (GNH). The benefit of looking into this indicator is that it allows a country’s progress of development to be tracked and recorded. Also, this indicator helps the government and non-governmental organization to make a correct decision of where to invest and to improve on. However, there is more disadvantage than the benefits. The data is incomplete in some of the countries which makes the index less reliable. In addition, the way the questions are asked and the survey was conducted differs from places to places, which also makes the data unreliable.

Evaluation: Advantages and disadvantages of social indicators for human development measurement

Human development is hard to measure, even with the social indicators present; Human Development Index (HDI), Gender Inequality Index (GII) and Gross National Happiness Index (GNH), they have multiple components or indices in which enables for further analysis to measure human development. However, not every social indicator are perfect with disadvantages present for all. For HDI, the data used to measure human development is the average data which would be less reliable than to use actual data. For GII, the indicator does not take account for types of employment and some other factors that might affect the data. For the GNH, the data collection are incomplete and unreliable. Therefore, the social indicators are a good way to get a general overview to determine human development in a certain area or a country, however, we should not be completely dependent on them.
