My parents played a crucial role in my literacy development by reading to me regularly. They would read the same books over and over again no matter how many times I requested them. I had this one memorized:

My mom spent a lot of time teaching me phonics at a young age. I believe this helped ease frustration that I might have possibly had with reading. I felt confident in my ability to sound words out and read aloud.

In kindergarten I got to go to the principal's office to read him a story because my teacher was impressed with my abilities. I think the principal gave me a pencil for my efforts. It was pretty exciting. Here's the book I read to him:

Somewhere around second grade, my dad started to assign homework to me over the weekend and on vacations from school. He would require that I read a certain number of pages every day and then he would skim through my book and quiz me. This was not very pleasant for me, even though I did like reading. I do appreciate his efforts, though, because I was a strong reader throughout my academic career. His instruction must have had a positive impact.

An important moment for me was when I first felt that I understood Shakespeare. I was 16 and had previously read Romeo and Juliet, Much Ado About Nothing, and Julius Caesar in a classroom setting, but we utilized simplified translations. I began reading A Midsummer Night's Dream on my own. The version I was reading had one page of original Shakespeare and the opposing page of modern translation. I went for it and read Act I in the original Shakespeare and I was surprised that I was pretty sure I knew what was happening. I skimmed the modern version just to be sure; I did, in fact, know what was going on! It was exciting and led me to jump into more literature that I was previously afraid of.

I struggled quite a bit with college. I changed my major a few times and dropped out quite a few times. Eventually I made my way to College of the Sequoias and settled on English as my major. I really felt like English Education was right for me, so I finally succeeded and transferred to Fresno State. I am now a senior and doing really well in my major. I'm surprised it took me so long to realize that English is the subject for me, considering I always did really well in it. I know that my literacy journey has helped me become the (finally) good student that I am today.
