1. Current state of transportation is a social issue. People commonly complain about traffic, unsafe conditions, wasted time, etc. Some objective qualifications of this issue could be high accident rates while driving or increasing pollution levels.
2. The Subjectivists would qualify the current state of transportation as an issue because of the number of drivers who are affected.
3. From a subjectivist approach, the most effective way to gain supporters for gun regulations would be to show how many current supporters there are or showcase all of the people who have been affected by gun violence. That way, people could realize the huge scale that this problem really is on.
4. Gun suicides are viewed as a social problem. Many people look at the causes of suicide and will attribute them to what is wrong with society today. These deaths could be minimized if some of these pressures were taken away.

I Do: Examining Weddings Through 3 Sociological Theories (James Vagedes)

1. I agree, because, people always want their wedding to go just how they imagined it, or dreamed of, and the wedding is seen as a failure or as less perfect if it does not go this way.

2. Although not discussed, Social Learning Theory proves itself to be relevant in wedding planning. The theory explains that people judge their own actions off of the actions of others. It is common in today's society for people to talk about and visualize massive expensive weddings. When planned, the couple does not want people to see anything less than a movie-like scene, so the result is more money spent. Instead of thinking entirely for themselves, the couple falsely learns that the wedding HAS to be expensive.

3. In 1950, the average wedding only cost about $79 USD, which would be about $789 USD today. With the average wedding cost today being $32,64 USD, there is a $31,852 USD difference.

4. I agree. People always want to be the first to do things. Everyone wants to be the fastest and show off to friends and family. Society sees the first to do things as the most successful. This results in competition and things being rushed.

1. The story behind my name is that my parent did not want me to have a very common name. My mom liked the name Carly, but my dad did not. So then they came up with Kylie instead because it is a combination of carly and my dad's first/middle names, which is Ty Lee.
2. I have had teachers of different cultures, mainly that of hispanic culture. Because those teachers and I grew up around different ways of doing things they often believed that our behaviors were wrong or inappropriate, even if we were not doing anything considered wrong by the culture here.
3.I do see how there could be benefits by being educated by someone who is of a different culture than me. I could learn new and different traits, skills and expectations/standards from this, even if I end up believing they are too out of the oridnary for me to follow. As a white student being taught by mostly white faculty I believe we miss out on opportunities to learn pieces of new cultures along with the standards the county assigns them to teach us.
4. Having a teacher pronounce my name correctly could make my social privaledge invisible because I would not even have to worry about having a teacher pronounce my name wrong. But, it is pretty common for my name to be mispronounced. A majority of people pronounce my name kaylee or kyle. it is very irritating because my name is not that difficult.

1. My mom gave me the name I have because she went to Russia and had a translator who's name was Milan and she liked the way it sounded and the meaning behind it.
2. Yes, I have had a teacher who didn't share my cultural background, but that has never created any cross-cultural issues.
3. Yes, I could see some benefits. Due to the fact that there are more white teachers than any other race, they are not able to share the same cultural background with their students or educated their students on their own culture because they are not of the same race.
4. If I were to have a stereotypical black girl name and the boss of a company that I was trying to get hired for was incapable of pronouncing my name correctly there is a chance that I would not get hired, whereas if a white female were to come in and have a stereotypical white name that is more likely to be easily pronounced, she might have a better chance of getting the job than I do.

1. Gun violence in inner-city 'traps' is common because most individuals who peddle drugs in these areas feel as if firearms are their only protection from getting robbed of their money and narcotics.
2. Gun violence from a subjectivist perspective is seen by most as an issue of the federal government allowing the open carry of them in most states, thus gangsters in the inner city use them for robbery protection and some cops use them irresponsibly to detain individuals (but its more like maim individuals)

In the US, people usually only put cheese and spices on their pizza because there is already tomato sauce on it. Cultural relativists do not judge but simply say that there are different ways to eat pizza.
4. The declaration of human rights is an example of social relativity because it highlights that each individual has their own rights. My belief is likely different from others I grew up with as I
grew up in a wealthier situation where people might prefer more expensive services.
4) Death rituals vary globally and chronologically. "Speak English" is racially coded as most people
who don't speak English are of a difference race.

1. A folkway is a commonly accepted norm without great social significance. A more is a norm with great significance. Mores are enforced by laws called sanctions.
2. I learned to drive in the suburbs of Johns Creek. There is a pretty high level of traffic, especially when I have to drive to Atlanta. A folkway from driving would be to merge to the left lane on Kimball Bridge before the light because the lane ends. A more would be not running a red light.
3. Common driving patterns include fast drivers in the left lane and slower traffic in the right, some people texting, seatbelts on, listening to music, yielding to pedestrians.
4. A geographically based folkway in Atlanta would be turning whenever you get the chance (unprotected left or right) because you don't know when you will get the chance again. In other places with less traffic there would be more time to turn and less rush. Driving through an intersection on yellow, while legal, is most likely more common in an area with more traffic.

Most sports have violent qualities, like in football, a very rough hit. In soccer a dangerous tackle. It makes a selfie stick less attractive because I do not want to cause other people issues because I want to take a selfie on a mountain.

4. Selfie sticks are not negative elements of society. Selfie sticks just allow people to include more in their selfies and selfies are not negative elements to society. Selfies are just ways people document the places they have been and the people they have spent time with. The selfie stick is very similar to the gopro and the gopro hasn’t caused any major issues. The selfie stick has just become another subcategory to photography and a way of expressing certain emotions. It is just an easy way to take a picture and that cannot be harmful to society. Most people will argue it promotes narcissism but with the selfie stick people are documenting the event not taking pictures of their face.

Olivia Rokose

1. Thanksgiving means spending quality time with my family and being aware of everything I have and realizing how lucky I am to have all these things. I learned to give it that meaning form activities in my early childhood that included writing what we were thankful for and painting hand turkeys.

2. It does mean they are real because they are something a large group of people have accepted and believe in. What makes something real is a large number of people believing in something.

3. The American Flag has multiple meanings depending on where you are from and how you grew up. Over time certain events have occurred that have included America associating the American Flag with things like violence to people from the Middle East or Freedom from countries with a lot of control like North Korea.

4. Over 115 professional organizations representing civil rights, educational, athletic, and scientific experts have published resolutions or policies that state that the use of Native American names and/or symbols by non-native sports teams is a harmful form of ethnic stereotyping that promotes misunderstanding and prejudice which contributes to other problems faced by Native Americans. Support for continued use of the name has come from the team's owners and a majority of fans, which include some Native Americans. Supporters say that the name honors the achievements and virtues of Native Americans, and that it is not intended in a negative manner. This illustrates the concepts described in the article because it showcases how different symbols mean different things to different people.

Another symbol that has different meanings our culture is the Confederate flag. To some, it is a sign of racism; to others, it is their way of exercising their freedom of speech.
4.The issue of the Washington Redskins is that some believe the term "Redskin" is a racial slur towards Native Americans. While others believe that it is just the name of a football team. This illustrates the concepts because some see it as racially motivated, while others see it at face value, a holiday where you give thanks to your loved ones.

Why Can’t We All Agree Gun Violence is a Social Problem? (Zach Ourada)

3. Subjectively, any change to gun regulation could have positive or negative out comes. Most people tend to think that increasing regulation would mean it would make guns less accessible to the public and thus less protection of its citizens. However, Obama is onto something, despite my views on his policy. Guns need to be out of the hands of the public all together, and if no guns exist, then the social violence that goes along with the possession of one would tend to occur less frequently.
4. Gun suicide or suicide aided by the use of firearms are definantly a social problem. Much of it is the accebility and connections that can be made with between people who sell guns and the mentally unstable. The largest part as to due with isolation and stagnation as well as loss of motivation, which leads an individual to carry out something so awful out and through.

A hat is one article of clothing that tells the world that the wearer likes the wear hats because it's comfortable and it's how they like to express their personality. As for social hierarchy, wearing hats may say that that they are middle class or higher because hats are not necessary but are more of an accessory. Another article of clothing is gloves. Gloves are typically used during the winter to keep the wearer's hands warm; however, like hats, gloves are not necessary. This may also indicate that the wearer is middle class or higher. Scarves are another article of clothing that indicates middle class or higher because they are not necessary, merely an accessory that helps to define your personality.
3. Whether wearing athleisure to work is appropriate or not depends on what kind of job you have. For example, if you work in an office then I do not think it would be appropriate because an office is more of a professional setting. I don't think coworkers would take you very seriously if you showed up to the office in athleisure wear.
4. No, the article did not change my opinion. As I said before, athleisure wear for work depends on what kind of job you have. If you work in a more professional setting or even if you are higher up on the chain of power in your work place, I think it is more appropriate to wear professional clothing so that coworkers respect you. I think the less professional the work setting is the more appropriate it is to work athleisure to the workplace.

Subculture: The Example of Bonnaroo (Zach Ourada)

1. An example of subculture that I participated in was when I went to an EDM concert. Surprisingly there was some Festival Trap, Dubstep, Moombahton, and DNB all in one concert. All the listed genres are sub-genres of EDM, which had enjoyable benefits at the venue.
2. The EDM sub-culture and we could say DNB (drum and bass) for this example, has a recognizable drum pattern that cleaves it from being considered just EDM. Holistically, EDM is electronic dance music which is a completely other ball park when it comes to comparing a genre like : country.
3. Drum and Bass is a genre of music for getting hyped and putting some individuals into a trance. Most feel like they belong by just by bobbing their head or jumping around. Most will wear I guess new-age clothing? and they behave like most normal people. Although I could admit some fans are sort of geeky and not your average music festival fan.
4. Hipsters are regarded as the more liberal individuals who are on the cusp of creating a new generation of free spirits and transcendentalists. That the best definition i can give out of my current thought.

1.In America it is standard for kids in public schools to not wear uniforms as they believe it encourages kids creativity and gives them a way to express their uniqueness. In India all schools even public ones wear uniforms as they believe it promotes unity among kids and not judge each other based on the type of clothes they wear, so I know personally many Indian adults find the American norm quite weird.
2.Because people are too full of themselves. Everybody believes they are the best and do what is best. Intuitively such thinking makes us judge other norms or traditions as sub par compared to our own.
3.People in Iran dip pizza in ketchup. I know this is the norm in India as well. People in the states do not put extra sauce on their pizza and instead put chili flakes or some other type of flakes. A cultural relativist would see it as different strokes for different folks. He may even want to try pizza with ketchup himself in the future.
4.Human rights should be universally accepted. However they are not. In many middle eastern countries women are seen as sub par to men. Thus it is culturally relative what "universal rights" are.

My Automated Life(Adamya Singh)

1. My mode of transportation to school is pretty automated. I use the school bus system and do not have to think much about it, just go to the stop at the specified time.
2. Someone from the conflict perspective would say that these days technology has caused many conflicts over how it should be used and regulated. Governments around have different view on censorship often to the anger of their people.
3. My future career as a programmer could be automated if artificial intelligence becomes sophisticated enough to code their own machines and themselves. That would be a sad day for me and maybe my job will become to perform maintenance on the robots instead.
4. Human intervention is necessary in the event of technical difficulties when the computer does not know what to do. The computer can only do what it is programmed how to do. If you order the same thing twice the computer may or may not catch that mistake but a human most definitely will or at least should.

1. A more common example of gender difference associated around objects would be large popularity of lingerie in the female American culture. I don't see men talking to each other about taking a trip to Victoria Secret to fins some men lingerie.
2. Another that doesn't pertain to exactly American culture would be: the burkkah. This object is representative of the laws and beliefs that exist in Middle Eastern regions.
3. Casual events place less stress on both genders of individuals.
4. I believe pushing the boundaries on this subject is a good direction to social change. I saw Jaden Smith had been in a very high-fashion magazine breaking gender norms and boundaries. He wore a skirt and other clothing that is applicable to the opposite sex but it still looked chic and groundbreaking.

It can become awkward if the other person is not sensitive how the generalized other might not be sensitive to the persons unique identity or be culturally relative to the other persons norms.
4.
