All the questions they get &quot;What are you?&quot; &quot;Where are you from?&quot; all of them were question that I have heard and it made me feel less alone that these nine other people and countless Americans had heard that question too . </title>

         <title>Mallika&#39;s story resonated with me too. My dad moved here when he was 30, and he was financially abused because he could not understand English. He worked a job for $3/hr, way below the minimum wage. Additionally people thought he was stupid and made fun of his accent. Assimilation and erasure of culture is many times not a choice but a decision made for survival </title>
