Later Laura doesn't want to eat at the table with Jim because of how uncontrollably shy she is. 

LAURA   suddenly   stumbles  -  she   catches   at   a   chair   with   a   faint   moan.]  

Laura ultimately faints when her mother pressures her into coming to the table to meet with Jim.
