- 1991 - Barre is overthrown, which sparks a civil war between rival groups. The former British Somaliland declares unilateral independence. 
- 1990s - US-lead UN mission to restore peace in Somalia fails 
- 2006 - Islamist Courts Union takes control of parts of Somalia, but is driven out by Ethiopian forces. 
- 2007-11 - Ethiopian troops withdraw. Al-Shabab - "a jihadist breakaway from the Islamic Courts" - advances into Somalia. Kenya intervenes.
