First of all, I will explain what War and Peace is.
War involves 2 separate forces attacking each other. This does not always have to be 2 or more countries as a Civil War is when a country is fighting itself. The best example of this is The American Civil War. The country was split between the Northern states with the American Army fighting, and the Southern states with their own militia with some American Army members. The war was fighting for Slavery, North was fighting to abolish it, under the leadership of Abraham Lincoln. The Southern states were fighting to keep slavery under the leadership of their Generals, most famously: General Robert E. Lee.
The main point is, no matter how successful war is for someone; it will always bring unnecessary sacrifice.
Peace is a time with no war or fighting involved, but not always tranquility. Tensions rise, and revolutions begin, there has been very little times of Peace in history. As humans, conflict is too hard to avoid. Even in the tribal era, inter-tribe wars broke out.

Next I will talk about the Church's response to the global issue of War, and the dream of Peace.
Pope John XXIII(23rd) wrote Pacem in Terris, an encyclical detailing his views on Global Peace and other subjects such as Justice, Liberty and Charity.
Chapter 2, Section 46 of the Encyclical states that "Human society can be neither well-ordered nor prosperous without the presence of those who, invested with legal authority, preserve its institutions and do all that is necessary to sponsor actively the interests of all its members."
While this is not specific to War, it does also show the church is supporting of Law Enforcement and Servicemen and women.

Chapter 2, Section 60 of Pacem in Terris is: "ensure that these rights are recognized, respected, co-ordinated, defended and promoted, and that each individual is enabled to perform his duties more easily." This is showing how the church does not support war itself, but hose men and women who fight. A good Military's main goal is to render itself non-existent, which means that a good Military will not invade a country because the General wants to. A good Military will not induct martial law because the General wants power. The Australian Defence Force is a perfect example of a good Military; the ADF don't fight for no reason, Australia is involved in multiple peace-keeping operations and border protection. The ADF defends the lives and rights of not only Australians but all those in need of protection and freedom.

Just-War Theory, was a set of Military rules thought to be mainly created by Saint Augustine. The first rule of this theory is "A war can only be waged after all peaceful options are considered." This entire set of rules is stating how a military can successfully maintain a just-war. Number 7 becomes controversial nowadays as it states: "Innocent civilians must never be the target of war..." The reason this is so controversial is because in the Middle Eastern Wars Terrorist organisations have started using Civilians as human shields and hiding among the innocent. This means that, mainly in the US Military, soldiers must breach and clear entire villages and treat all civilians as possible hostiles.
The Sources, that the church receives information about war from, can be a slightly adjusted. When religion is involved in war, it is usually the cause of it. Some chaplains are in Military's all around the world but the Church itself would receive as much information about war as civilians do. This does not mean they are making an incorrect decision. Almost all serving Military personnel around the world are just regular people and are doing it for the right cause. The Military makes people great friends and give them great new attributes like co-operation and leadership. Their goal is not to kill people, it is to uphold the rights of all people, and defend the lives of all in need.

My view on War is it is a horrible subject that should never happen, but peace can't happen in this time with too many leaders who want power more than peace. We can't forget those men and women who risk their lives, because people believe their religion is too kill those who don't follow them, or because their leader wants more land. They put their lives on the line, risk everything because those at home can't. WWI and WWII are the exact example of War being a waste of time. Millions of people died, because some relatives were angry and had too much power. Many people take freedom for granted, until you serve on a Peace-keeping mission. When you see happy villages with children playing on the street but armed soldiers patrolling the streets because the hostile forces are hiding inside. People riding bikes down the road, and a tank beside them. These people are living in a war-zone, but it's their home. Imagine walking down your street, and seeing armed soldiers cautiously searching your neighbour's house because they may have a hostile soldier inside. Imagine driving to school or work, and having Military helicopters hovering over your work/school with Special forces repelling down, and a tank driving behind you. Those men and women are defending people they've never met or even seen before. Those servicemen and women are being shot at daily, to defend people that have nothing to do with them. their lives would be no different if that country was in a war or not, but they still came to fight for you. From WWI, those young men went to fight some country they'd never heard of, to defend a country they weren't born in, and most of them died for us to be sitting here today. We must not forget those men and women, ever.
Lest we forget.

Are Ethical issues black and white? Why should I look for the grey?

Ethical issues aren't just black and white, everyone has their own point of view and their own opinions. Racism is always existent, and we can't change that but if we take that step to show we are equal, we don't need to worry about that 1% who can't give up their racist opinions.
As new eras rise, new beliefs rise with it. In the 21st Century we are still very close to the years of extremely racist actions; such as the White Australia Policy. The White Australia policy wasn't abolished until 1965. Slavery in America caused a Civil War. These actions would always happen, but we must stop the cycle here, and not let history repeat itself. The grey area is not being racist or not being racist. The grey area is being able to learn from other races and improve our own. If we all join together, racism will still exist, but it won't matter as the greater numbers would lie in equality.

Many wars were caused by racism, and the ADF has participated in them. WWII was major discrimination and as Australians we put our hand up and said, "We will fight." Because we have our racist past, and still today but we can get over that and start the new era; the Era of Equality.
