Also if someone decides to build or invest in building water pumps in Sudanese villages like Salva, it always ends in happiness and laughter.

1/19/18 I do agree with Salva's fathers decision about going back to Sudan because his father told him not to go back to his village because his father knew that the war was still going on around the Loun-Ariik village where his family was and Salva’s father didn’t want Salva to be going there until the village was safe. I think Salva’s father was just trying to watch out for him because he didn’t want Salva being there until the village was safe.

I think that water can bring people together and drive people apart. I think this because People are willing to come far and wide for water, as we saw in Nya’s story when she mentions that people regularly come to her village to get water. In contrast, Water can also drive people apart. People may start fighting over the territory that has the water, potentially turning people against one another to create war, as we have seen a number of times throughout history. This is why I think water is a very powerful resource, and can drive people apart or bring them together.

Connor Bagnell Sec 5 Yes because if the people in Africa have no water then they will have to split apart and look for water everywhere. If they do have water then they won't split apart and just have a happy time with their friends and families. They have to do what they have to do and they cannot help it. They need to stay alive.

James Baldwin Section 5 I think Salva will obey his father’s request because Salva’s father said that the Loun-Ariik is still war ridden. Salva will not ignore this because if he went to the village to see his family, they will be happy but both the Rebels and the Government will try to take him for a soldier for their army and might kill him and his family in the struggle. If that happens and Salva dies ignoring his father would make everything worse and him seeing his father in the first place would be useless. His father would feel dreadful and the war would have just killed another man.

If I were Salva, I would have followed my father’s directions. I think this because to me, it is an incredibly strong sign for you not to visit your village during the war if your father, who knows you and most likely knows how much you would have missed the rest of your family, disagrees with you traveling there. There is a very good chance that your father is telling you not to go because he cares about you and doesn’t want to see you hurt. These are the reasons that if I were Salva, I would have followed my father’s instructions and stayed away from the village.

Compare and Contrast Rochester to Salva’s home.

Salva’s home in Sudan and rochester are different and alike in many ways. Rochester is very cold and modern. It has cars and paved roads. There is not so much conflict. Where as Sudan has dirt roads and is very hot. Sudan also has many wars and conflicts. But Rochester is a town like Dinka is a tribe. They both also have schools. And many different families.

I do think that water has power to bring people together or bring them apart because during the book water seemed to have made everyone kind of be more conservative and be more appreciative, like when Salva and his group were walking through the desert Salva had to only take small sips of his water because he knew that his journey would be long and he knew that there wouldn’t be water for them to stop and get along the way so he had to save some of his so that he could refresh himself every so often throughout the journey rather than drinking it all at once in big gulps he knew he had to save it so he did, I think that showed him how to be conservative and appreciative of what he had. Also with Nya’s village I think the borehole being drilled it might have brought her closer to some of the other kids in the village because they were all watching the borehole being drilled.

I disagree, Salva should go back to Southern Sudan to see his family. He has not seen his family in two decades since the war in Southern Sudan. Probably why salva’s dad said not to go back to Sudan because he thought Salva might die if the war was still going on. He should go back to Southern Sudan.

I think what Nya’s father is referring to when he says”Can’t you guess.” is that he wants Nya to know that this is the time she has been waiting for her whole life which is a school to read and write. I think this because it says in the text that Nya always wanted a school to get educated by and that when her father says “Can’t you guess” and it’s a building there is a high percentage that they are building a school.

Compare and Contrast Rochester to Salva’s home. Salva’s two homes can be compared and contrasted in multiple ways. I can compare Rochester and Sudan because they both at one point in time were Salva’s home. I can contrast Rochester and Sudan because in Rochester when the story takes place it’s freezing and it’s winter, but in Sudan the weather is always hot and he did not have to wear layers. Another way I can compare Rochester and Sudan is that Salva at one point had a home in both places. Another way I can contrast Rochester and Sudan is that Salva got a better education in Rochester than in Sudan. In all Rochester and Sudan have their similarities and their differences, but to Salva they both feel like home.

Rochester has Civilized society, plenty of food/water, it is colder, there is jobs/education, there is not that much wars as there is in Sudan, it is more crowded, the people speak english, there is no deserts, there is trees. Stuff they have in similar are, they both have people living there, there both on planet earth, there are some plant life in both. They both have animals such as birds, horses, camels, Salva has 2 families, one in Sudan and one in America.

Another reason he shouldn’t go back is because Salva asked his father “And...and my mother?” His father replied “She is back in the village.” “I must see her.” said Salva, but his father said “There is still war near Loun-Ariik, my son. If you went both sides would try to force you to fight with them, You must not go.” I also think that his father is right because that is why he had to flee his country and had to stay in a refugee camp, because of the war. My last reason is that because he has already been through so much like, losing Uncle Jewiir, losing Mariel, and more so that is why I think Salva should not go back to the village.

One way that I can compare Salvas home to Rochester is that they have cars, Salva talks about the cars while leaving his homeland. One other thing that is compared is the Salvas homeland has community's like Rochester. Also people have a place to live and go like Rochester. One thing Rochester has different is the paved roads, Salva was surprised to see them, all the roads in Salvas homeland where dirt. Another thing Salva noticed was the bitter cold Rochester had, it was very hot in his homeland. Rochester also had buildings and unique skyscrapers unlike the small houses in his homeland. People also wore different clothing than his people, And most of the people where lighter colored. They also had different culture than Salva. The land is also very different it is grassy. Rochester also has good food and water, also has electricity. Rochester also has education and jobs.

To make because he is a man now and if he really wanted to make the long trip back then he could and after all he had not seen his family in 11 years. Water is a very important piece to the story “A Long Walk To Water”. In the book the water is very limited, and children have to walk long distances to find it. I believe that water has the power to bring people together because in the book Salva’s tribe was in a war with Nya’s tribe, so if they ever met each other chances are that they won’t like each other. Then Salva decided that he wanted to help everyone by building pumps, to pump up fresh water. Salva even decided to build a pump for his tribe’s enemy. When the pump was finished everyone celebrated, and was happy. Nya even thanked Salva for the water. In this case, the water had brought everyone together. Another time that water has brought people together was when Salva had been sleeping in the old woman’s barn. There was a small puddle of water there. The old woman and Salva were both drinking from the puddle. The water in the puddle brought the old woman and Salva together.

Salva’s home is very different than Rochester New York because in Sudan it is hot, there is tons of poverty, people have tribes and markings on their forehead, there are small huts with dirt floors, everyone is African with dark skin, eyes, and hair, you have to walk miles to get water two times a day. In Rochester New York the weather changes all year round, there is some poverty, people look diferent, there are tall buildings everywere, roads, a sink, shower, dishwasher, washing machine, electricity, etc. Besides there diferences they both have civilization, families, pets, and houses.

Also even though Salva is older you should listen to your parents because they're not going to try to hurt you they’re trying to help you because you’re their child.

I think that Salva should listen to his father, because he wants Salva to be safe. Southern Sudan was war-torn and his father wants him to stay out of it. He has Salva’s best interest in mind, and I think that Salva would be disrespectful if he directly disobeyed his father. On the other hand, Salva has waited years! If not, decades to see his family! And I think Salva would be a bit frustrated if someone just says “You need to wait” even more than he already has! I think Salva should do what his father says, and wait to see the rest of his family. He needs to stay strong, he can’t visit his family if he’s not alive, if he gets caught up in the war.

Salva gave the water to the Nuer village in which Nya and her family lived in. The Nuer seemed very thankful to get the water even though the Nuer (Nya) and Dinka (Salva) fought for over fifty years. I think the reason why the Nuer let Salva into their village is because they were so desperate for water and Salva was nice and wanted to help out everyone who was thirsty, even those who fought against him. Rochester and Southern Sudan are very different from each other. Southern Sudan has a lot of wars, extremely dirty water, and not a lot of good education. On the other hand Rochester has available schools, clean/fresh water, and not as much wars as Southern Sudan. Also, even though they are both in the same generation they both have complete different technology from each other. Another thing is that the cars are very different. Sudan doesn't really have any cars. Rochester has a ton of cars, so it is easier to get around, than Sudan a.k.a Salva's home.

The question that I’m picking is the second one asking to compare Rochester to Sudan. First of all, Rochester gets snow and lots of it. Sudan never ever gets sleet and barely get any rain. Then, in Sudan you have to hunt for food and cook your meals over fire. But in Rochester, you can just go to the store for food and cook it on a stove or in an oven.
