A boy clings to his neck, dragging him underwater, but the boy is shot and dies, allowing Salva to come up for air.

Despite the chaos, bullets, and crocodiles, Salva manages to survive and reach the riverbank.

He later learns that more than a thousand people died that day, and he wonders why he was one of the few survivors.

With nowhere else safe to go, Salva decides to walk south toward Kenya, where there are refugee camps.

By the end of the first day, he becomes the leader of about 1,500 boys, some as young as five years old.

Salva heard that his father’s name had been found on a United Nations aid agency list, so he immediately planned to go to Sudan. But with the war still raging, it was very difficult to make the arrangements. He had to get permits, fill out dozens of forms, and arrange flights and transportation. After several months of completing all the procedures, Salva traveled to New York City, another one to Amsterdam, and a third to Kampala in Uganda. He rode in a jeep for many hours on dusty dirt roads, feeling that the familiar landscapes of Sudan looked both the same and different. Salva, living in a refugee camp fleeing the war in Sudan, heard that some boys would be chosen to go to America. Only healthy orphans could be selected, so Salva waited anxiously as lists of names were posted for months. His name never appeared -until one day, his friend told him he had finally been chosen. When Salva checked the list, he saw his name next to Rochester, New York. In July 1991, rumors spread that all Ethiopian refugee camps would be closed. Salva, now seventeen, learned that the Ethiopian government was collapsing. One morning, soldiers arrived and ordered everyone to leave the camp and the country. Chaos erupted as thousands of frightened people ran in the rain while soldiers fired their guns and chased them toward the Gilo River on the border of Ethiopia and Sudan.

Salva realized that they were being forced back to Sudan and would have to cross the dangerous Gilo River, which was swollen from the rains and filled with crocodiles.

Meanwhile, in Nya’s story, a group of men visits her village. They begin searching for water and choose a spot between two large trees. Nya is confused because she knows there is never water there, but the men are confident that they will find it. Back in 1985, Salva struggles with thirst. Uncle Jewiir tells him he must save his water to survive, because he is still too small and weak compared to the others.

살바와 일행은 끝없는 사막을 계속 걸어간다. 세 명의 여인이 죽어가는 남자들에게 물을 나누어 주어 몇 명은 살아나지만, 다섯 명은 결국 죽고 버려진다. 살바는 깊은 슬픔을 느끼며 자신이 더 강했다면 물을 나누었을지 고민한다. 여정을 계속하던 중 삼촌은 마을이 공격받고 불타 가족이 사라졌을지도 모른다고 말한다.

한편 냐의 이야기에서는 낯선 남자들이 마을에 와서 물을 찾기 시작한다. 그들은 두 그루 큰 나무 사이를 파기 시작하지만, 냐는 그곳에 물이 없다고 생각해 의아해한다. 1985년의 살바는 심한 갈증에 시달리며 남은 물을 아껴야만 했다. 삼촌 주위르는 아직 살바가 작고 약하니 물을 아껴야 살아남을 수 있다고 말한다.

Salva met his father and he knew his brothers' death.promising to meet again, Salva went to USA. Salva felt as if he walked for hours while staying in exactly the same place. Then the large clump of rocks up ahead-it almost seemed to be moving. And Salva realized it was people. All of them collapsed on the sand. They were trying to raise their body but fell back again.Then the woman in Salva's group opened her container of water. A man tried to stop her, but she ended up giving the fallen man some water.

살바는 마치 몇 시간 동안 같은 자리에 멈춰 서서 걷는 것 같은 기분을 느꼈다. 그때 앞쪽에 움직이는듯한 커다란 돌무더기가 나타났고 살바는 그것이 사람들이라는 것을 깨달았다. 그들은 모두 모래 위에 쓰러졌고 몸을 일으키려다 다시 넘어졌다. 그때 살바의 일행 중 한 여자가 물통을 열었다. 한 남자가 그녀를 막으려 했지만, 그녀는 결국 쓰러진 남자에게 물을 주었다.

Slava came to visit the man, Mawien Dut Ariik. Slava recognized him. It was his father. Slava said “l am you son” 

In the first time his dad cannot believe it. But few minutes later he hug Slava crying. His father said every on thought you were dead and Slava’s mother is back in the village.

Salva struggled to survive in the scorching desert. His uncle told him to save water and move little by little. When Salva hurt his toe and lost a nail, the pain and exhaustion made him cry and fall behind the group. But Uncle encouraged him by calling his full name and setting small goals to walk from one bush to the next, then to a rock, then another. Step by step, Salva kept going, thinking of his family. Each day felt the same endless heat, dust, and emptiness but he continued to move forward with determination.

Nya realized how important and hard it was to get clean water.

Most of the refugees in the camp are boys and young men who escaped from their villages to avoid being forced to fight in the war. Salva is separated from the people he traveled with and feels lonely and afraid, but he keeps hoping that his family might be there. He searches every face in the camp and makes a promise to himself that if his family is there, he will find them.

After many weeks of walking, Salva finds it strange to stay in one place, even though the camp is safe and he has food. One day, while watching new refugees arrive, he suddenly spots a flash of orange—a woman’s headscarf. It reminds him of his mother, and filled with emotion, he pushes through the crowd, determined not to lose sight of her.

This chapter alternates between two stories.

First, in Southern Sudan, 2009, Nya watches a crew drilling for water. Ironically, they need water to keep the drill running, so they haul it from a pond using a leaking plastic bag that keeps bursting. Despite constant setbacks, the boss stays determined—encouraging, persuading, and sometimes scolding his workers to keep them going until the drilling continues.

Second, in Ethiopia–Sudan–Kenya, 1991–92, Salva witnesses a terrifying scene at a river crossing. Soldiers force people into the water, and others jump in to escape. The strong current and lurking crocodiles make the crossing deadly. Salva sees a young man nearby dragged underwater by a crocodile, leaving a cloud of red spreading through the water.

Uncle tells Salva their village was destroyed and his family is missing. He must return to war after taking Salva to a camp, but promises to look for his family. Salva feels sad yet hopeful.

삼촌은 마을이 파괴되고 가족이 사라졌다고 말한다. 전쟁에 돌아가기 전 가족을 찾아보겠다고 약속하자 살바는 슬프지만 희망을 느낀다.

Visitors arrive in Nya’s village. They talk to the village chief about water. Nya wonders why—they already know the nearest water is half a morning’s walk away.

Salva walks through the hot desert with his uncle. His shoes fall apart, and he must walk barefoot. The journey is exhausting and painful under the relentless sun.

살바는 삼촌과 함께 뜨거운 사막을 걸었다. 신발이 다 해져서 맨발로 걸어야 했다. 태양은 무자비했고, 길은 고통스럽고 지치게 만들었다.

"캠프에서 새로운 가족과 친구를 만들 수 있다"고 위로한다. 결국 삼촌은 살바에게 강해져야 한다고 말 하며 떠난다.

As Salva crosses the desert, he avoids looking at the dead bodies but knows what fate awaits them. Tired and heartbroken, he continues walking with his uncle. His uncle comforts him, explaining that he will take Salva to a refugee camp but must later return to fight in the war. Though devastated, Salva learns that he can form a new family and friends at the camp. His uncle encourages him to stay strong and not give up like a child before leaving him

Salva felt nervous speaking to the audience but remembered his past experience leading the boys to Kenya.

Encouraged by their interest, he began talking about his project for southern Sudan.Over the years, he kept working toward his goal, solving one problem at a time as his uncle had taught him

Salva meets his new American family at the airport. They welcome him warmly and give him winter clothes. He feels the cold for the first time but realizes he can live in it. Thinking of his family in Sudan makes him cry, yet he wipes his tears and starts his new life in America.

In 2009, a drilling machine arrived in Nya’s village to search for water. The villagers worked together, carrying stones and breaking them into gravel to help with the well project. The sounds of machines and people singing filled the air a new and hopeful noise, even though the water had not yet come.

In 1985, at a refugee camp, Salva searched for his mother but realized that his family was gone. Though overcome with despair, he remembered his uncle’s advice to take life one step at a time. Telling himself to “just get through this day,” Salva endured and ended up living in the camp for six long years.

Nya saw first spray of water and she felt excited. She asked what his father do.Salva was surprised to see new environment in USA. But he had trouble in adjusting new environment.

The ending gave me hope. When Salva returns as an adult to build wells, he changes many lives, including Nya’s. The book taught me to appreciate simple things like water and to believe that one person can make a big difference.
