This group of students is a widely diverse group in regards to cultural background and ethnicity. There are 22 boys and 23 girls enrolled in this class. The class as a whole remains engaged for the majority of the time, however they perform at a higher level when split into smaller groups. Every week in 2017 an unarmed civilian was killed, with black boys and men serving as a disproportionate minority in the killing statistics. Black males accounted for 22% of all fatal police shootings in 2017, but account for 6% of the population (via The Washington Post). As our passion project we ask that our students and community write letters to their local police chiefs and state representatives imploring that change be made to protect Black American's from a pervasive system of stereotyping that ends with mass incarceration and death.
