Reflection:
Question 1:
1. The first takeaway that I have learned throughout this academic semester is the important role educators have promoting cultural diversity. Promoting cultural diversity in the classroom allows for exposure and awareness of distinct transitions, customs, cultures, and religions. The course textbook explained various strategies, lesson plan curriculums, parent communication, and classroom scenarios that gave prospective educators tips and manners to integrate in the classroom.

2. The wow moment I experienced reading chapter 9 was learning the contribution that the Middle East impacted modern society. For example the contributions towards the arts, architecture, science, mathematics, medicine, literature, and philosophy. In particular the major contribution in the field of mathematics introducing the concept of solving for X by presenting it as an unknown quantity.

3. The second takeaway I acquired throughout the semester is the importance of establishing a professional and personal relationship with the parents/legal guardians. The readings allowed me to understand that communicating with parents will allow individuals to learn personalized customs and traditions their student may practice at home

Question 2: The first form I plan to apply this gained knowledge as a future educator is schedule a parent and teacher conference that best works with a parents schedule. In the reading it mentioned that parents may have complicated work schedules but does not necessarily mean they don't want involvement in their students' education. I also plan to send out an About Me survey that parents would complete to have an idea of cultural traditions they may or may not practice. This will allow me to be culturally aware by respecting their personal beliefs. The second form is promoting cultural awareness that will be conducted through books, arts and craft, around the world clubs, and a diverse music playlist.

Question 3: This course was extremely helpful as a current after school educator since I was able to apply all the gained knowledge by making a around the world club, promoting culturally diverse books, background music from different countries. The main thing I would have liked different was the assignments being graded in a timely manner. Since we were a week away from finals most of the assignments with a large point average were not graded. As a prospective student in the credential program I was concerned I was not going to get the prerequisite grade letter to meet admission qualifications.

https://www.amazon.com/I-Am-Jazz-Jessica-Herthel/dp/0803741073

I am Jazz By Jessica Herthel and Jazz Jennings Pictures by Shelagh McNicholas

I selected this book to be part of my future classroom since it discusses and introduces the concept of gender equality to young readers. What makes this book more impactful is that the main character of the book is based on a real person named Jazz Jennings. The concept of gender pronouns and acceptance towards the LGBTQ community is introduced in a simple yet effective manner. Applying the “"10 Quick ways to analyze children's books for racism and sexism" this book does not contain loaded language which does not have a second meaning to certain terms or phrases. If anything the booking is educational and informative in clearly introducing new terms and ideas to young readers. Secondly, I was able to get informed on the author's background to verify the credibility to publish the book. As mentioned the author is more than qualified since it is based on her personal story.

https://bookshop.org/p/books/don-t-hug-doug-he-doesn-t-like-it-carrie-finison/14602554?ean=9781984813022

Don’t Hug Doug ( He Doesn’t Like It) By Carrie Finison Drawings Daniel Wiseman

I selected this book to be part of my future classroom library since it discusses and introduces the concept of respecting someone else's personal boundaries. The book overall covers this idea on the importance of consent and personal boundaries in a child appropriate manner. I believe this concept should be introduced early on for students to learn and apply appropriate acquired conduct.

https://www.amazon.com/Tease-Monster-Bullying-Building-Relationships/dp/1934490474

Cook, Julia, and Anita DuFalla. Tease Monster (a Book about Teasing vs. Bullying), Boys Town Press, 2013.

The reason this book was selected for my future classroom library is because it explains how rapidly one can go from teasing to bullying. The book presents the topic in a child friend manner where it is easy to comprehend. The book had a lot of bright color on the illustration of the monsters which was appropriate for the targeted audience and the operative words were emphasized with bold and colorful letters.

Book Selection: Charlotte’s Web By: E.B. White Pictures By. Garth Williams

When applying the 10 tips to analyze a book I immediately noticed how the first page there is already a form of loaded words. The book states “One of the pigs is a runt. It;s very small and weak, and it will never amount to anything. So your father has decided to do away with it” (E.B. White). Immediately as a future educator I detected how the author was trying to imply the act of killing the kid in a kid friendly manner. It is evident that there is some form of loaded words that promote a second hand meaning. Second, as a future educator I verified the authors background to check the qualifications to publish this form of book. It is important to note that E.B. White attended Cornell University focusing on English and journalism during his early career. E.B White during his career published several well known children's literature. Third, I have searched for any form of hidden message and the book overall plot message was not negative or harmful towards younger readers in third grade. Finally, consider the effects on the child’s self image since the book promotes this idea of speaking up for your inner thoughts and beliefs starting with Fern advocating for Wilbert and Charlotte webbing a spider web for Wilbert.

I will be using this book in my future classroom and course curriculum but will ensure to talk about the importance of speaking up for your inner thoughts and belief. I believe most educators dismiss this main idea but the book shows how Fern spoke up and conflict negotiated changing Wilbert's life outcome.

But when viewed with the objective to gather distinct ideas from different educators or lesson activities it can assist creating cohesive lessons. For instance, in the course reading we learned that an educator should learn to adapt to the students needs and interests. Teacher pay teachers may have some lessons or activities that may be based on the student interest that will meet the academically enriching needs that can assist you if you are in a time crunch .

Reading Rockets

https://www.readingrockets.org/books/diverse-children-s-books

This website is an excellent source for school libraries or educators setting up their classroom library. I like that website is set up in a manner that is sectioned off by grade levels, reading topics, and instructional support reading.

https://blog.planbook.com/classroom-ableism/

Article Title: The Teacher’s Guide to Combating Classroom Ableism

I liked this article based on the format that it presented the material and was directed to a large audience not just educators. The article was effective when it cited the Association for Supervision and CurriculumDevelopment (ASCD) since they advise how educators should work with parents and students in order to adequately accommodate classroom environments to any physical and mental disabilities. Overall, this article was able to explain and provide useful resources on how to create a safe inclusive environment.

https://www.learningforjustice.org/magazine/what-is-the-model-minority-myth

Article Title: What is the Model Minority Myth

I liked this article since it presented common misconceptions and stereotypes that surround Asian American students. Reading this article allowed me to think back about how those misconceptions and myths were prominent towards Asian American. I love how the article listed the distinct stereotypes targeting Asian American, historical contexts, governmental laws, and educators' role towards representation. Overall, this article was eye opening and informative to read as a prospective educator.

https://www.amightygirl.com/blog?p=28874

Article Title: #MeToo in Middle School: Talking About Sexual Harassment and Boundaries with Tweens

I selected this article because it discussed an ongoing issue that is often overlooked by administrators and educator issue none as sexual harassments. It allowed me to see that young children unknowingly experience sexual harassment by peers and when discussed the issue to an adult often seen as innocent. This topic was a sensitive topic since I experienced sexual harassment when I was younger but I never knew about such a thing called sexual harassment or about giving consent. I believe speaking about these topics to teenagers and validating any reports made can have a positive impact.

The video provided a first hand perspective on the harsh discrimination and inequalities that Japense Americans faced in the concentration camps. I enjoyed watching the film since I was able to see a harsh reality of the truth within the concentration camps beyond wha have read in my history textbooks.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tia3w3t5WlU

This video that I watched was one of the most informative and educational films I watched this academic semester. I chose this film because it was fun, modern, and entertaining in presenting the facts/ statistics in a timely manner. I was able to learn about the different forms women wear a Hijab and the religious and personal belief behind it. I do wish that there were more films like this one throughout the semester since the information presented in fact was targeted to youth viewers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krfcq5pF8u8

The 13th

I selected this film because of the main message that the director wants to set across to the audience is this ongoing issue of racial discrimination towards people of color. For the audience to understand that the government system in the justice system has failed countless times throughout the years. Since people of color are often incarcerated for crimes that they have not committed. The objective of the documentary was to create an informative public awareness to this issue in order to create some form of change to help create justice again.
