I recently had the pleasure of participating in a Musical Futures workshop at Western University. Having just learned about a variety of music education methods, I was quite curious as to what method Musical Futures would be demonstrating. To my surprise, Musical Futures was something brand new. I had never heard of, nor participated in such a lesson where students learn the concepts of music through the production of modern music. Rather than using worksheets or small activities, Musical Futures provides students with the opportunity to participate in something much larger. This new perspective on music education inspired me to think about alternative ways of education in future music education classrooms around the globe and how to save the dying art. Students need to be engaged and interested in music if we want our music programs to continue. Not only does this program provide a fun, engaging way to introduce music education, but it also teaches students about working together as a band and solving problems. Such a program should be welcomed into school systems. I do hope that more students have the opportunity that I had and that they enjoy it just as much.

The Musical Futures workshop at OMEA was amazing! It’s a pleasure to attend a session that is relevant to our times and our kids. The best part was when the students taught the teachers – this is the sort of thing that I believe should be happening in our music classrooms and it’s refreshing to see it reflected in a workshop. The best way to ensure our music programs are relevant for our kids is to let the kids participate in creating them. It’s a relief to know that individual music educators are no longer alone when it comes to combating the disconnect between the real world and the music classroom – Musical Futures is here to support us.

Rebecca and I have been putting Musical Futures into effect since second semester last year and it's going great! The response from the students has been very positive, which has lead to greater engagement, increasing section numbers, and as a result, great support from our administration.

Such an inspiring testimonial from the original pilot secondary school in London (TVDSB). Here is the report after the first few days of offering the first full Musical Futures course: My day started at 7:55 with two female students coming in the music room to "practice" before class. The one young lady said "nothing could get me to come to school early except for this class"! Once first period began, I had a student who has graduated and on a waiting list for the Mufu course show up to check if there was room for him today. He will check back tomorrow to see if anyone has dropped the course so that he can get in. Immediately after the announcements, I asked my class how they were doing today. One female student who has just returned to school after having a baby (now 7 months old) said "I was up a lot last night with my baby but I'm here today because I just couldn't miss this class". I had about 10 students from this class waiting outside the music room at lunch for the chance to come in and practice. I had a senior student spend his spare every day this week setting up and organizing the instruments and equipment so his band doesn't have to waste valuable class time setting up. He also has a plan to advertise our music programs on the school announcements called MCTV complete with video footage of our program. I mentioned to my grade 10 MuFu class that course registration begins next week after the assemblies this week. I explained how we are offering a grade 11 MuFu course next year as an extension of the grade 10 course they are in. at least 2 students have already visited their guidance counsellor and signed up for the course already. Our students are very grateful for this program and show us every day how much it means to them. It is truly inspiring. I've taught in 3 schools over 13 years but this school with this program is by far the most rewarding!

Alicia is a grade 8 student at St. Vincent Catholic School in Chatham (St. Clair Catholic District School Board). She has no vocal, piano or music lessons outside of school - just gifts and a passion. She began to play for our school band "The Vinnies" after attending MuFu PD in Feb of 2013. She has taken off and is soaring.
