We use D2L as our LMS and I find it useful to create discussion questions in a thread rather than in a topic. This allows for better flow for discussions - students see everyone's posts rather than having to click on a specific student's response. I will post follow-up questions in a new thread to help keep the conversation going, using the tagging feature in our LMS. This allows me to respond and point out several students at a time, which brings more people into the conversation and is more efficient for me. - Shannon Brenner, Northeast Iowa Community College

I really enjoyed Dr. Terry's "choose your path" introduction assignments so they can respond to the topic of their choosing. I work with ESL students, and this would go really well with them. Especially when it comes to the immigrant experience, we could definitely have several different lenses from which to add to the discussion.
Socratic Method

A couple years ago I switched my discussion prompts in such a way that they now require students to employ the Socratic Method in their discussion participation. My current discussion directive looks something like this:

"Posting Guidelines

Your initial post is due on Thursday by midnight.

Read through your classmates’ initial posts and respond to some of them in the form of a question by midnight Friday. Examples:

You could ask questions that will give you a deeper understanding of the initial poster’s opinion.

You could ask questions that might challenge the initial poster’s opinion or ask them to defend their opinion in more depth.

If you disagree with the initial poster, you could ask them to respond to your counterpoint.

You could ask the initial poster how they drew their conclusions.

Reply to those who asked questions about your initial post by midnight Sunday."

By doing this, I feel I'm accomplishing a couple things: (1) I'm requiring students to put more thought into their replies, because they now have to come up with a question that is relevant to another student's original post, and (2) it helps me focus my own responses, as the instructor. If several students are getting questions asked of them by their peers, it allows me to focus first on students who haven't received any engagement and then circle back to the others.

I have eliminated the number of required responses and original post word count entirely. Rather, I use a rubric to clearly explain grading expectations for quality posts. Additionally, the nature of students asking each other questions naturally increases engagement, post/response length, post/response quality, etc.

Devin Dodson

NMSU-Grants

ddodson@nmsu.edu

In D2L, I create discussion boards visible only to the student and myself for journaling. This is a nice way for students to have a journal where all posts are in one place and we can have a conversation for as long as we'd like about what they are writing there. I use this as an "exit ticket" tool sometimes as well. - Shannon Brenner, Northeast Iowa Community College
