He didn’t know any English at all but he was very successful in his prior school. His mom met with me during conferences and said (with a translator) that Juan isolated himself at home and did not talk to his family at all. It brought me joy to tell her that he was making friends and even trying to teach me Spanish during recess time.
I chose this GIF because I often felt defeated. I had so many English language learners and our ESOL department struggled to find resources. I would look at my students while I taught and I started to feel as if I was a disservice to them. 
I began pulling them during small group and teaching them the basics of the English language. Juan was a fast learner, but some weren’t.
COVID ended the year early and I made the decision to leave the school district. I visited them during their 5th grade graduation and Juan greeted me with “You better know your Spanish”. I smiled and watched him hold conversations in English with his friends as he received his trophy for receiving all As that year.

He felt degraded because of his inability to articulate his thoughts. Sometimes students are so shy that they are afraid to talk, but it’s important to keep encouraging them to speak because it’s through speaking that they build confidence.
The entire class needs to be told that their voice is important and that they are valued. Reminding students of this regularly helps them to treat each other fairly and with respect.
