Missouri entered as a slave state, Maine entered as a slave state. Raises tensions as some do not want Missouri to be a slave state. Missouri could have more representation.

Protective Tariffs- 1828

The north wants protective tariffs because they had factories and wanted to make more money off of it. Tension rose because the South did not want the protective tariffs because it would raise the prices of manufactured goods.

Nullification Crisis- 1828-1832

Claimed it was a state right to declare a law unconstitutional and nullify (void) through a special convention. This threatened the unity of the US and the exclusive right of the supreme court.

The Mexican/American War- 1846-1848

Compromise of 1850

The compromise entailed; California enter as a free state, slave trade(not slavery) outlawed in Washington D.C, organize the remaining land ceceded from Mexico into two large territories, pay Texas, strengthen the existing Fugitive Slave act. This could cause some issues in westward expansion.

Written in response to the Fugitive Slave Law. This outraged Southerners by it's "exaggerations" concerning Slavery.

Kansas/Nebraska Act- 1842

Urgent demands to organize western territories as a result of the Gold Rush. Northeners wanted it through unorganzed Nebraska, Southerners wanted it through Texas.

Bleeding Kansas- 1856

Dred Scott Decision- 1857

He was a slave who was taken into free territory. Scott felt that that he was free since he lived in a free territory and sued to maintain freedom. Court decided that african american are not citizens and therefor cannot sue. Went on to say that Scott was property and could b taken anywhere. This went against constitution.

John Brown Raid- 1859

John Brown, a white man, wanted to arm slaves for a slave rebellion.He failed miserably at acquiring weapons. Heightened sectionalism. Southerners were scared of abolitionists and freed slaves.

Election of 1860

The election prompted South Carolina to secede from the union. Republican Abraham Lincoln campaigned on a platform of 'free soil'.

Theory of Succession- 1860

Comes from state rights. The USA has a confederation of states, not a union. Says the states has more power than the federal government. This caused some issues.
