Every war has a cause. In the case of World War I, the causes can be identified using the acronym M.A.I.N. M stands for Militarism. Militarism was the building and holding of a military of a country. This was important because it was seen as a red flag and surrounding countries thought maybe they were going to attack. A stands for Alliance systems which consisted of different alliances and secrets around the world. I stands for Imperialism. When one country takes another country's territory they aren't going to be very happy. Finally, N stands for nationalism which is the pride citizens have for their country. With too much, it could cause a ruckus.

The Schlieffen plan was a plan that when war would break out, Germany would first attack France and then Russia. Doing this would avoid head-on engagement. The Schlieffen plan also helped with the wars predictability.

Trench Warfare was very popular in World War I. Trenches were dug in the earth and these trenches would be filled with soldiers and all the things necessary for war and survival. However, most of the time it wasn't very sanitary and many diseases occurred in the trenches.
As time went on technology and weapons became more advanced. Some newer things that were used in the war were airplanes and submarines. Airplanes were useful to look and attack at enemies from above. Submarines would do the same but from below. Some newer weapons were poisonous gasses and these were used to kill or mobilize groups of people.
With these new technologies and these weapons came new hazards. Because you could be attacked from any angle you had to be very aware of your surroundings. With gasses you would never know when you are being attacked so it was always handy to have a gas mask to stop from dying from the gas.

Sub warfare was first used by Germany. Submarines would attack and take down ships above them. The problem with Submarines is the fact that they cannot see who they are shooting at, they just shoot. In 1915, one of the German submarines sank the Lusitania. This was a huge deal because this ship was a passenger ship full of American citizens who weren't involved in the war. The use of these machines were seen unsportsmanlike to all of the other countries and the use of them eventually seceded.
