- Lectures being covered are not repeated again in the classroom

I attend every lecture because I feel bad for the lecturers
for eg. there was once there was only 3 students in the entire lecture and another lecture more recently, there were only about 5 students
i attend lectures in case i miss out on anything important
some lecturers randomly tell us things during lecture which are important for term tests
grades are important to me so i go for lectures

I attend almost every single lecture
so that i can better understand my what are being taught. as such i’m able to apply these knowledge in my tutorials and eventually in tests and exams
it is easier to understand what is being taught in face to face lectures as compared to e-lectures . in electures, i am unable to ask my lecturers any questions that i am unsure of

Attendance for lecture reduces throughout the semester. First few weeks usually 90%, becomes 60%/50%.
Students attend lecture because

don’t understand lecture slides
have questions to ask after lecture
want some information before reading the textbook

Students don’t attend lecture because

too boring
prefer to read the textbook
woke up late
too much assignments
don’t understand (?)

Not very worried. Assume that students will do their own reading, have their own means of understanding the concept (eg. watching youtube videos). Feels that students can use other means of understanding the concept as long as they get to the same endpoint as going for lectures. Students should come to lectures if they exhausted all means but still don’t understand. Some teacher may assume that if students don’t come, they don’t understand the lecture.
Don’t actively encourage. Used to put blanks but students spend time filling the blanks and not listening. Also, lecturer’ version usually made available afterwards.

Reasons affecting attendance:
dependent on how interesting the lecture is? whether the subject is interesting
whether there is use of different types of multi-media (videos etc)
The timing of the lecture (not too early or too late, e.g comm psych was bad), if there is class before or after the lecture.
Personality characteristics (whether they like the lecturer)
don’t really have a lot of concerns or feelings, because it’s students’ own independent learning. if they are able to study on their own and can do well, As long as you find it’s more helpful for you it’s okay if they don’t attend lecture. Depends on how a student learns. But still thinks being present can help with learning.
Have never tried any sort of implementations. Don’t really insist lecture attendance. Passive aggressive. Have tried to make lessons more interesting.
when asked about the cohort diff: she says she only teaches y3s currently and recently, and though she taught year 1s and 2s before she still feels that the fluctuations are due to the period/ timing of the lecture.
teaches more of the textbook type, community psych sucks which she attributes the students being uninterested

4) think lecture attendance is important as lectures are definitely beneficial as they can cover content that tutorial don’t have the time and space to cover. Specific purpose to deliver the breath of everything to be covered. It’s important. BUT, Because of non mandatory nature, students have their own personal choices to make. May share info on assessment and test on the basis that full lecture attendance is expected

5) Tried telling students that he will be releasing certain content/ tips on the subject only in lectures to get students to come. Have not tried other forms of implementation.

Assume that students will do their own reading, have their own means of understanding the concept (eg. watching youtube videos). Feels that students can use other means of understanding the concept as long as they get to the same endpoint as going for lectures. Students should come to lectures if they exhausted all means but still don’t understand. Some teacher may assume that if students don’t come, they don’t understand the lecture.
