"Chronicle of a Death Foretold" by Gabriel García Márquez · Chapter 1 by Jennifer Cortez

Hello, my dear IB English scholars! This question will guide our class conversation: What social/ political structures facilitated the murder of Santiago Nasar? Please identify the types of violence prevalent in the village that contributed to murder by citing evidence from Chapter 1 to support your claims.

The World Health Organization defines violence as: “The intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community, that either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment or deprivation.” Be prepared to elaborate on Zoom on Thursday!

"It was what he always did when he caught me alone in some corner of the house, but that day I didn't feel the usual surprise but an awful urge to cry." (13). This contributed to murder because it showed acts of violence were not punished early on by the men in the town, and therefore they felt empowered and entitled to commit these acts since they never learned they had consequences it also shows why people didn't warn Nasar about his downfall.

Santiago Nasar, who was a young child at the time, never forgot the lesson of that accident." I think that this is more emotional violence because the physical action wasn't used to physically damage another person. The event that takes place here affects Santiago because it ends up scarring him internally and causes him to keep bullets away from his gun. This could have helped him with the murder because if he was armed at the time he may have been able to do something about it. -Liam

"Santiago Nascar grabbed her by the wrist when she came to take the empty mug from him. 'The time has come for you to be tamed' " (9)
Santiago compares Divina Flor to an animal he can "tame". He can take her over and sleep with her etc. Santiago shows acts of both sexual and emotional violence, although I believe it's more of an emotional violence because he's degrading her and making her feel less than, which takes a toll on any woman in the long run for the rest of her life. Meaning, she will always think less of herself because that was how she was treated growing up.

Divina hated his actions once again showing how disliked Santiago was.

(Marquez 13) This helps contributes to the murder of Santiago because Victoria was the mother of Divina. She though this won't stop until he is dead.
