"The cotton dress should have looked strange, but all I could think of was that I should ask my mother if I couldn’t wear a dress to school, too, instead of my Indian clothes" (Rau 2).
This quote shows identity from those around you because the Indian girl in her class didn't want to wear Indian clothes, instead she was choosing to adapt to those around her and dress like them in order to fit in. She is finding her identity by conforming to those around her instead of her own culture.

“The headmistress had been in India, I suppose, fifteen years or so, but she still smiled her helpless inability to cope with Indian names.” The headmistress has a cultural identity of being better than the Indian people. The culture puts her above them and she acts accordingly.

I remember having a certain detached and disbelieving concern in the actions of “Cynthia,” but certainly no responsibility.” (Rau 1) this quote shows how much santha makes herself different from the two names at school and at home. She would be Santha at home and “Cynthia” at school. This shows identity in a name because she is identifying as her true self Santha at home where she doesn’t feel out of place and she identifies as “Cynthia” at school because that’s the name she was given and is expected to go by that name. A part of her true identity is being held back because the headmistress wanted her to have a “prettier and easier” name.

"How about Cynthia? Isn't that nice?" This quote shows identity thru a given name by a english teacher. At school her name and identity was Cynthia and at home her name and identity was Santha. At the end of the story she had forgot about her identity Cynthia because it was her school identity. She was smart enough to forget about herself when she was in school. and only consider herself Santha who she knew and she was comfortable being.

This quote shows identity from culture because it shows certain traditions or things they usually do. For example, siestas are common within cultures in other countries. The word ayah was also in the tex5 which is like a maid or nursemaid in India. This also shows something else about their family’s culture in the story.
