Hi everyone! Here is one of our math strategies that we have been practicing for the last 2 months. This focuses on understanding and applying place value knowledge. When subtracting we start from the right side and move towards the left side. We can break numbers into "jumps" of 10, 5 or 1. For example, 22 would be broken into 2 jumps of 10 and 2 jumps of 2.

Math Strategies

We have number line again. This time for addition. When we are adding, we want to count on from one of the numbers. We always want to break our numbers into jumps of 1's, 5's, and 10's. Later on when we master this, we can do larger jumps. When adding 27 + 32, we break the 32 into 3 groups of 10, and 2 ones. Therefore I would have 3 jumps of 10, and 2 jumps of 1.

Place Value

This is a 1st grade example. Now we are onto Hundreds. We are developing adding and subtracting numbers in the 100s. Understanding place value is required to use our math strategies

High Frequency Words

These are our high frequency words that the students read first thing in the morning. They also read them when transitioning to a different class. It always helps to review at home!

Vowel Teams

Here are previous vowel teams that the students have been exposed to during the last 2 months. These vowel teams usually make the long vowel sound. We are currently on 'ea'.

The most common pronunciation for 'ea' is the long e sound as in eagle.

It also makes the short e sound as in bread.

Measuring Math Unit

This unit's is all about measuring and understanding the conversion between inches, feet, and yards. It's very important that we recognize that we want to use inches for small objects (pencils), feet for medium sized objects (a desk), and yards for larger objects such as hallways or football fields.
