Cyclops primarily resided in south-western Sicily, and devoured human beings. They neglected agriculture and ravaged the land for their food supply, rather than laboring for it. Laws or political institutions were nonexistent in their society, and each lived with his wives and children in a cave of a mountain. They ruled over a region with arbitrary power. Polyphemus was the son of Poseidon and the nymph Thoosa. Although Homer did not directly state Thoosa's origins, many believe that she is the daughter of Phorcys; a primordial sea god.

Polyphemus trapped them in his cave when he found them eating his cheese and drinking his milk, killing 6 out of the 12 men of Odysseus' crew. By this time, Odysseus devised a plan: give the monster wine and blind him with a burning stake to the eye while he slumbered; then, tie themselves to the belly of the sheep and escape when Polyphemus lets the animals out to graze. During the monster's drunken stupor, Odysseus says his name is "Noman", escaping retaliation. However, once out at sea, he reveals his true name in a bout of pride, resulting in the cyclops calling upon Poseidon to curse them and killing the rest of Odysseus' crew.
