Cymatic is a science that studies waves. Like sound waves. In this field, researches found that every frequence of sound corresponds to a visual pattern. Frequence is the measure. It's what makes dog hear far better than us.Those sound waves when moving create a disturbance in space. It creates vibrations. It changes the environment. And that in a micro scale can also be measured. But in images. Those metal boards with sand create patterns according to the frequency (Hz). Then the grains of sand starts to build up a pattern. They increase in complexity along higher frequency. It's more a scientific way of visualising sounds. They use this technology to keep track of dolphins language, for example. Scientists create signs from the patterns.
The best is that it can be reproduced very easily. A reasonable speaker can provide the vibration necessary to move little particles around.
       Also, the patterns created can be compared to what we can observe in nature. Those can correspond to Fibonacci's sequences that are found all over the world in flowers, snowflakes and so on. Those long time unexplainable correlations can all be the very definition of how music functions. It may be god's signature all along. May. Be. 
Not only as science: Those beautiful goddish-like images are art! The oxygen in the air, how the waves of sound move through it.         The applicative facet of the project is used in music schools all over the world. It is now a reference to help teach younger generations. It’s high-tech interface and intuitive proposition makes classic sheet music look outdated. And it does teach complex musical theories. 
       One of the Biophilia songs was conceived while Björk was studying crystals. The rocks arrange themselves in such geometric perfection, that should be in this project that homages nature. The artist then translated that geometrical aesthetic into her song, Crystalline. She attributed the shapes of crystals to the compass of the song renovating music itself. Those unconventional sounds are accompanied by a also visually intriguing video. There are ten tracks exploring our universe includind a song called Virus. All visual and sounding inspired by the Earth. 
       Björk used a lot of unique instruments in this album. Henry Dagg appeard on it with his sharpsichord. On the virtual side, she has her own homemade instrument. Only it has the cooperation of a Apple tech Guru. It is from the song Moon. It came from the phases of the moon and the ocean tides. There is a spine and butterfly wings, suggesting that the metamorphic property is unlimited. The harp arrangements were overlaid and textured. Björk composed it as the ocean waves. They are meant to simplify the process and to allow more intuitiveness to the user. More often than not those representations are unified by the mission of making music easier. So their main purpose is to communicate not only sounds but all that configures a unit of sound such as space timing and duration. 
Those designs are divided in two main types: one is for recordings and the other is for inbuilt instruments. When recorded, the sound is meant to be less precise than with eletronic ones, so there is no reason for it to be too precise in length but in volume and other noises that might be interfering. Eletronic instruments on the other hand are not as sensitive to rhythm as expected so the design of it is meant to facilitate precise notes to precise timing (Green one is the virtual instrument and the blues are recordings).
Therefore it depends on what is the objective of the piece so it can offer the right functionality. Imagine if the creators changed the design of recordings for the preset ones. It would ruin the entire app.
