Mechanical weathering can be seen all over the place and I found my example right outside my front door. We often walk by these cracks on the sidewalk and possibly think nothing of it but it in fact has been mechanically weathered. I believe when there is cracks, like the ones in my examples, that they are formed by the change in temperature and weather conditions such as rain and snow expanding and breaking the rock into smaller pieces. In my images you can see how there is a little bit of grass that has been growing in the crack. In my example the iron that is in the grill combined with oxygen ended up creating iron oxide. This is also known as rust, this weakens the composition of the grill and as you can see in the close up, it starts to become very thin and will just chip off. With gravity's force against the rocks and soil they begin to move downward and collect at the bottom of the larger rocks. My examples were taken at the corner of Randolph and Prospects.
