Using this assessment strategy on top of the assessment of their paperwork gives teachers a better idea of where the students are as far as understanding the material. These four buckets with different options for the level of mastery give students the opportunity to self-assess and turn their paper in the bucket that they feel best matches their confidence in the material.

Novice-I'm just starting to learn this and I don't understand it yet!
Apprentice-I can do this if I see an example or get help!
Practitioner-I can do this on my own without any help!
Expert-I can do this on my own and explain how to do it!

Concept maps are a great way to teach AND reinforce key components to curriculum, like vocabulary terms, key words, main ideas...the list goes on. They are just one of the many graphic organizers that encourage students to recognize the relationships between ideas through diagramming key words and phrases, even pictures. This form of assessment can be used for ANY subject! Just put the main idea/standard in the center and students can convey their understanding through as many side bubbles as they choose!

Hot Seat is something I would absolutely use everyday in the classroom. A few random students everyday (without knowing) would have this hot seat note card taped underneath their seat...if they do, they have to answer the essential question at the end of the lesson. (EQs will be on the board for everone to see on a daily basis.) At the end of the lesson (closure), students (as a class) will check their chairs to see who has the cards. Hold them up, and try to answer the essential question. Its a great formative assessment, and an even better discussion starter.

Hands down, one of the coolest technological tools I've seen thus far in my career! Students will see this as a game, but teachers can use it for easy data collection!! Plickers is an app that teachers download on teir smartphones or smart devices (with a camera). When you sign up, you are given a set of cards that have QR codes on each. For each way the QR code can be rotated, it represents a different letter (A, B, C, or D). With Plickers, the teacher can display a question on the board through the app. The students will then hold up their QR code cards in the direction of the answer they think is correct. Once everyone's is up, the teacher will use their smart device and scan the room using the camera on the Plickers app. Plickers scans the QR codes across the room and will then display the answers on the board. It will show how many people answered with each option. This shows the teacher how many of the students have grasped the concept, and for those who haven't, it shows what misconceptions they might be experiencing so the teacher can tailor future lessons to the students' needs!

Bumper stickers are a fun way to assess students' mastery of any given topic while also challenging them to think creatively. Students will be given a strip of paper where they will write a short catch-phrase or slogan that summarizes the main idea of the book, characters, lesson, etc. They can decorate the "bumper sticker" to show off some creative thinking skills! This is a fabulous way to let the kids do something we know they love to do-color-while also assessing them individually on the main idea or big picture!

Fist to five is an easy way to quickly gauge whether or not students are following the lesson the way the teacher anticipated. During independent or group work, the teacher yells "Fist to five!" and students quickly self assess and raise their fingers correlating to how well they understand it so far. Every amount of fingers means a different level of understanding, and teachers can scan the room to see how many need assistance individually, or if the teacher needs to take a whole new perspective for the entire class.

An easy and popular way to integrate technology into the classroom is Twitter! This can be used as assessment by having students tweet something from the lesson that day-whether it's the main idea, an interesting fact or a question the student has. By attaching a specific hashtag (using maybe a vocabulary term), students can view all of their classmates' tweets.
With lower grades, students (probably) don't have devices to tweet on...if that's the case, the teacher could make a Twitter wall where students can write their "tweets" on strips of paper and post them where they are all visible to the class.

Commit and Toss

What a fun way to make the students think you're crazy! :) Commit and Toss is a fun assessment that includes throwing paper balls...awesome. Each student should get a sheet (or half sheet) of paper with a question from the lesson or unit. All of the questions should be different. (An easy way to solve this problem would be to take questions from a quiz/test and cut them on separate slips.) When all of the students have their question, they should write their answer on the paper and why they believe that is the answer. Remind students that this is an anonymous game so they shouldn't put their names on it! When everyone finishes, have students crumble their papers into a ball, and on the count of three, have them throw the balls into the middle of the room (the carpet/an open part of the classroom). Everyone then will go to that spot and pick a paper ball (can't be their own). Students will take turns reading the questions and answers to the class and they will be discussed as a group. Students can either agree or "respectfully disagree" and give their reasoning...great discussion starter! Can be used as a review as well!

Very self-explanatory: at the end of the lesson, students will whip out a sheet of paper and conduct a 321 brain dump! They will write down three things they remember from the day's learning, 2 examples of what they learned (or how they could use it in the future), and 1 question they have about the lesson. This could serve as a ticket out the door so the teacher is guaranteed to collect it!

Give the students a little bit of responsibility and have THEM create their own test....sorta. At the end of the lesson, have students create their own test question, in multiple choice format, and circle the answer. Not only does this encourage the students to think deeper about what they learned that day, but the same questions that they submitted to you could be used the next day or two for review/activating schema during the anticipatory set of the next lesson.
