She rises before dawn, a yellow container on her back, her steps heavy with both hope and burden. In her Borana village, water is life, yet it is never near. Some days the journey is two hours; in the dry season, it stretches to twelve-an endless road of dust and thirst. Along the way, she faces not only exhaustion and hunger but also the silent fear of violence that shadows her path. Every hour spent searching for water is an hour stolen from rest, from care, from livelihood. Her labor sustains her family, but at a cost-less time to produce food, less strength to nurture, and greater insecurity at home. Still, she walks, because to stop is to surrender. In her resilience lives both the struggle and the strength of Borana pastoralist women.
