concepts are flexible enough to address variable learning needs. Stations work in concert with one another. A teacher may create a writing center and an art center. Students don’t need to move to all of them to achieve proficiency in a topic or set of skills. Centers are defined by different teachers in different ways but two kinds of centers are particularly useful for differentiation: learning centers and interest centers.

Defining centers: A learning center is a classroom area that contains a collection of activities of materials designed to teach, reinforce or extend a particular skill or concept. An interest center is designed to motivate students’ exploration of topics in which they have a particular interest.

In general centers should:

- Focus on important learning goals.

- Contain materials that promote individual student growth.

- Use materials and activities addressing a wide range of reading levels, learning profiles and student interest.

- Include activities that range from simple to complex; concrete to abstract; structured to open ended.

- Provide clear directions.

- Offer instructions about what to do if student needs help.

- Include instructions about what to do if student completes a center assignment.

- Use a record keeping system to monitor what is done.

- Include a plan for ongoing assessment of student growth.

Materials in centers are typically teacher constructed, though they encourage students to share in designing what and how something will be studied. Materials and tasks focus on mastery or extension of specific understandings or skills. They are also more exploratory than other assignments.

I love the idea of being able to upload texts which students, who have a lower than 450 lexile level, can then translate - when they are struggling. I also love the mixed genres and that they're aligned with standards.
