Over the course of the last year, Ben Wolfe experienced "the times of his life." He became an overnight football sensation, dated Dallas Suzuki, and stood up to one of the toughest teachers in the school. Unfortunately all of these great things came with some downfalls. The short-lived friendship with Rudy, the death of Sooner Cowans, and of course, the finality of having to share with those people he loves that his time on Earth was limited are all events that put a damper on Ben's "going out with a bang." This song by Kansas emulates the seizing the day theme of "Deadline" and is a good representation of Ben's life - the ups and the downs. Even though there was a deadline on Ben's life, he did have some of the greatest experiences, as well.
- Mrs. Warner

At the beginning of the book, Ben refers to the song " too old to die young" when he finds out he has a terminal blood disease. The song symbolizes Ben when he writes the letter for his family and friends in his final year, Ben does see life differently and despite the fact he's only 18, he dose the most living he has ever had until he's " too old to die young".
- Herman York

Ben Wolfe upon finding out he is sick with a terminal disease realizes that in the end what he did, does not necessarily matter. He attempts to name a street Malcolm X Avenue to create a legacy, but the idea is shot down by the residence of Podunk. He has to tell his family and close friends that he is terminal this puts heavy strains on his relationships, everyone he was close to is slipping away. He gets isolated when he tells the class he has limited time. He watches the clock tick life away and again he feels himself slipping, everything he had fell apart when his secret got out. When he started his downward spiral he lost it all, so in the end it didn't matter. This song relates to Ben's life in the book, the song expresses situations like time anxiety, not expressing the truth, and the song matches the downward spiral in Ben's life, from when he doesn't immediately tell the truth all the way till when in the end it didn't even matter.
-RJ Terry

He also talks to the hottest girl at his school . "And I don't want to think about tomorrow what if tomorrow never comes? Take me to a place without the sorrow the story's gettin old, where the good die young". This songs represents Ben Wolf not thinking of his illness and him dying . He is living life to the fullest. Ben Wolf is also a good person and doesn't deserve to die from his illness and he is also in high school . That's why this is a good song for this book." This song sounds like something bens brother would listen to, to help him get over bens death. Overall this is a great song and i absolutely love the song and it has a lot of meaning behind it. It talks about meeting your best friend back in heaven and causing trouble up there just like he did before he passed and waiting for everyone else to get up there with him. -Dylan Cotton

'Till I Collapse by Eminem fits Ben Wolf's character in Deadline almost perfectly. He has a no quit attitude, even when faced by a terminal blood illness. Ben does not pursue treatment, because he doesn't want to go out "bald and puking." He steers away from cross country and goes out for football, a more physical sport, because he has nothing to lose. Even in the later stages, when he is facing fatigue from the illness, he continues to go to school and attempt to go for jogs when he feels good enough to. Ben keeps doing as much as he can until he "collapses."

-Alex Kennedy

Throughout the book Ben talks about how he isn't necessarily afraid to die and towards the end of the book he talks about how his body is slowly dying all the way up until he dies. In this song one if the lyrics is, "In the end
As you fade into the night (Woo-oh-oh-oh)
Who will tell the story of your life", I believe this lyric matches the song well because in the end of the book Ben's brother, Cody, is the one who talks about Ben and reads the last note Ben left for everyone. Another lyric I think goes with the book is, "Cause it's the end and I'm not afraid I'm not afraid to die", I believe this also goes with the book Deadline and Ben because once Ben finds out he is dying he says he isn't scared of it, and he just accepts it and comes to terms with it. This is why I think this song is a good one for the book Deadline and to describe Ben.
-Ava Jodon

Instead of being a coward he decides to do everything he has been to scared to do. he makes a new friends to Rudy McCoy and he later kills himself which put Ben into realization that once you are gone your gone. He then looses a good friend Sooner which helps put the song into realization. Once someone is gone they will not come back and you have to finish your life before you can talk to them again. The song also shows that once someone dies there is so much that you wanted to say or do with the person who passed.
-Logan Jacobs

The the book "Deadline" Ben Wolfe is dying. Ben is a very good kid that is going to die. In the beginning of the song it goes "I'm running 'round like a fish with my head cut off". In the book Ben is trying to do everything before he dies, like playing football and trying to help Rudy. Also in the song it goes, "I don't want to thing about tomorrow, what if tomorrow never comes?" Ben not telling anyone at first that he is dying no one will know how or why he died. "Jesus called but I wasn't there." Ben talks to Hey-soos in the book. They were also both in High School. This is why "Good Die Young" is a good song for "Deadline".

By Ben Allen

Ben shows a nothing to lose attitude throughout the book. He is going for the best looking girl, he goes out for football, and he tries to make an impact in his history class. The same attitude is shown in Mason Horne and Chase Mathew's song "Cheap Shots". They sing about going through a break up where they were cheated on. Chase sings about taking him into the parking lot and beating him up for it and not caring if they called the cops. This reminds me a lot of Ben in the book because in most situations he does not care if he gets in trouble or doesn't get his diploma. Even though they are not singing about dying in the song, I think the moral of the song relates to the book well with the whole "nothing to lose" idea.
-Reid Boczar

Throughout the book Ben Wolf became a football star, got with his crush, pushed people to their breaking points and he did it because he was dying. He just lived day by day. This songs to me represents that attitude because in the main chorus it says, " We're just living for today," and " We are the ones still swinging." He didn't stop his attitude towards the world even on his death bed.
-John Miller

Ben Wolfe struggled telling his piers and family about his disease that he had contracted because he didn't want treatment, and wanted to live a full life his last year alive. Ben experiences hardships of life in one year and somehow found out the meaning of life, for himself, and made peace with the world and his friends in the short time he had. He managed to find love, help Rudy except who he was and helped forgive him, he battled for equality, and helped Dallas except herself for what happened. This song by Maxo Kream describes the life he has and what he went through in his time in Houston, Texas. Kream had to live through the pain of the ghetto and selling drugs to survive and killing other gang members. He talks about selling crack, molly, lean, and marijuana and how he now has a good life rapping in order to make money. I think Maxo and Ben both had to fight to be excepted by the people around to be understood by their fellow piers. Also, Maxo mentions how he fought RICO and how his fellow crip gang members are fighting the prison system just like how Ben was fighting tooth and nail to have a perfect year. Lastly, they both had trouble being accepted by family, Maxo was trying to impress his father who was also a criminal and Ben struggled with telling his father about his condition. Plus, Maxo mentions selling crack in his song and the money he made selling it, which reminds me of how Ben was giving Rudy supplements and taking supplements to help stay healthy, Finally, Maxo Kream talks about his personal use of Percocet and how the doctors said he needed to take "chill pills" or downers, which goes along with Ben's doctor telling him he needed to fight the disease and take aggressive treatment and getting the medication he needed to fight his illness.
-Elijah Zielinski

I picked the song "Dyers Eve" because it represents the lead singer, James Hetfield's parents and how his mom was terminally ill just like Ben and wouldn't receive treatment because she was a christian scientist. Ben didn't want to receive treatment like James mom, and how he can't forgive her for what she's done, so people might've not forgiven Ben for doing what he did. But did what he did for the reason to live life normally, also didn't let anyone change his mind to receive treatment.
-Teddy Coleman

Before he knew about his sickness, he never took any chances but, now that he knows about it he is taking chances and doing things that he would've never done before. Also, in the song it says "Let's make the most of the night like we're gonna die young
We're gonna die young". Ben is always making the most out of everything, every chance he gets he is taking. Ben is trying to live life to it's fullest before he has no time left to. This is why I think "Die Young" would be the perfect song for "Deadline".

-Colin Reid

And in the story they told each other stuff that would make them think differently about them. And in the song it talks about someone telling rumors and and people start judging them. Like Ben when was diagnosed with terminal blood disease he did not want to be treated differently but wanted to do new things. He takes risks and things he did not think he would do.

There is a lot going on in the novel "Deadline" regarding teenagers and their way of handling situations under pressure. In the book, Ben Wolf shows us how much one person can change at the knowledge of their upcoming death. And the fact that Ben did not want to treat the blood disease that he knew about, explains why I chose the song "Teenagers" by My Chemical Romance. The song discusses how teenagers are reckless and wild and don't care unless somebody will bleed. Sure, nobody physically fought until they died, but they did have their own ways of fighting and being reckless and wild. Ben Wolf showed us a new meaning to confident and reckless when he began to care less and less about his well being. He argued with teachers, threw away his diploma, and he joined a football team as a scrawny minnow. The saying "Teenagers scare the living sh*t out of me" describes Ben and his decisions perfectly.

-Sierra Schink

This song reminds me of Ben because he is 18 and can make his own decisions, and instead of telling everyone that he is dying he decides to live his best life. He fell in love and wanted to tell the people he cared about about his illness instead of keeping a secret. After Sooner died he went to his father to see if he wanted Ben to tell his son anything since he'll see him on the other side. the line from the song "I'm so cold I need you darling," correlates with the book because the last time Ben sees Dallas he's sick, weak and just wants to hold her one more time. " Time has past for choices" when Ben tells his family and Dallas it was too late for him to make the choice to start treatment. " Leaving, I hate to see you cry" Ben didn't want to tell Dallas but the guilt of keeping it from her outweighed keeping the secret that he was going to leave her.
- Connor Brammer

"Congratulations" by Mac Miller I believe that it fits into Ben Wolf's love life with Dallas Suzuki in a way because Mac says "Its my only chance I better get it right". This would be an example of how Ben only has a small amount of time to make it work with Dallas. So literally it is Ben's only chance to get with Dallas and to "get it right" being that he works out with Dallas. Also Mac Miller says "Take your time my baby" this I feel really connects to Ben's situation because of Dallas and how important she became to Ben. For example "Take your time" would be a great way for Ben to be telling Dallas for her to her time with the small amount she has left with Ben to be alive.
-Samuel Yeager

In "Deadline" by Chris Crutcher, Ben choose to not tell anyone about his illness and to not get treatment. The lyrics, "I am focused on what I am after, The key to the next open chapter" and "I'm just making my way and I'm gone, Here's the weight of the world on my shoulders," . I have interpreted these lyrics to Ben focusing on living his life to the fullest and taking life by the handle bars till his next "chapter" happens. He is just trying to get through his last little bit of time without people treating him differently that is why he did not tell anyone about his illness till later on in the book. I interpreted that to Ben having the weight on his shoulders. Also, that "weight" leads to Ben feeling guilty about not telling anyone, especially Dallas. There are a few more sets of lyrics that also describe what is happening to Ben in the book. This is why I think this song is a good choice to describe Ben in the book "Deadline" by Chris Crutcher.
-Jaclyn Thiel

"Right" by Mac Miller depicts a difficult kind of love, similar to what Ben and Dallas go through. Mac Miller sings, "Love turn into life," while Ben knows that Dallas will pretty much be the love of his life, making it so much stronger for him. I see this song fitting in shortly after Ben tells Dallas about his illness and she makes him leave. When Mac Miller sings, "And I been itchin' for your love" and, "Times get harder, things get strained. All I know, I don't want you gone," it shows how Ben is feeling without Dallas as his illness becomes stronger. Dallas tries to stay distant but it's not so easy to let go of a bond like theirs, knowing it's soon gone forever. This can be shown through the lyrics, "I know it hasn't been easy lately. But you don't wanna leave me, baby," also because Ben knows he was wrong for keeping his secret and has seen how it has impacted Dallas. I believe that there's a variety of Mac Miller songs that could describe Ben's point of view or his relationship with Dallas because of how strongly emotion is portrayed. This one in particular represents the rocky relationship between Ben and Dallas after he told her the news about his illness.
- Alana Lenhart

"You should be here" reminds me of the ending of the book "Deadline" at graduation where Cody is reading Ben's speech. Cody says " I was hoping I wouldn't have to do this; that my brother could've deliver his own address". Cody wanted his brother at graduation. who wouldn't want to share that special moment with family especially siblings? All I want in my life is to make me brother proud and that's what Cody wanted too. Cody and Ben had each other's back. Ben wants the best for Cody. He wanted to make sure Cody got his scholarship before he passed. They didn't have the greatest homelife but at least now Cody gets to strive in college and have a bright amazing life with his guardian angel looking over him watching him succeed.

¨Life Is Beautiful¨ by Sixx: A.M.
This song relates to the story because In the lyrics it talks about dying and how ¨you can´t quit until you try¨. In Deadline Ben is given his terminal diagnosis, with that information he decides to make the most out of his time left. He decides to work harder than ever before and argue his point to anyone who will listen, instead of just throwing in the towel. Another line in the song that relates to the story is ¨There´s nothing like a funeral to make you feel alive.¨ When Sooner Cowans died it was a real eye opener for most. Including Dallas Suzuki, she put her feelings aside about how Ben decided to tell her about his illness and she stuck by Ben because once you are gone there´s no coming back. Lastly, In the song there´s a line that says, ¨Open your eyes and see that life is beautiful.¨ Once Ben stopped worrying about what was going to happen next, he began to appreciate and live in the now.
-Alexia Juncker

This song relates to the book ¨Deadline¨ in a few ways. In the beginning of the song it states "Not the greatest feeling ever.¨ Which reminded me of when Ben was told that he had this terminal illness. In the book Ben had to literally pull himself together and make it seem like there was not anything wrong with him. When it states ¨The less I know the better.¨ reminds me of how Ben did not tell him parents about his illness until towards the end of the book, he just did not want to be treated differently. The lyric ¨Til´ I saw your face, now I can´t erase.¨"Made me think of how Ben fell in love with Dallas. He truly cared about her and he always thought about her.
- Heather Libbey

I heard it when I read about Sooner's death, when Ben told Dallas about his illness, and when Cody and Dallas last Ben. The lyrics talk about loosing a loved one and having a hard time letting go. "Hold on i still want you, Come back i still need you" symbolises how even though they had warning, they were not prepared to loose Ben.

I chose this song due to the way it really makes me feel similar to the way that the author describes how the song "Too Old To Die Young", makes Ben feel. I really love everything about this song, when I came down ill, I was frightened, when I heard this song it made me forget everything that sucked and I felt at ease. I am unable to relate to Ben exactly, but I am able to make some similarities. The more I read into the book, the more it reminds me of life, and how people make an impact on others life. As I came to the end of the book, I came to realize and think that maybe Bens illness was for the best. The way Ben was able to help Rudy, when Rudy was never even able to help himself, was very heart-warming, Dallas was able to put her trust in Ben and tell him her secret, how he made an incredible impact on the football team, and made both Cody and the coach happy. Ben helped shape his community a bit, especially with the Malcom X Avenue on the street where Sooner and his family live. Ben would have never taken advantage of things like that if he didn't have the illness. In the end, not only did things work out better for Ben, but his community as well.
- Bethany Amenkowicz
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxYw0XPEoKE

I believe this song relates to the way Ben Wolf feels about Dallas Suzuki and the thrills of being in love. The song states that the singer is "Hooked on a feeling" as love can often be addicting (AKA Hooked) and in some cases it is just as fleeting. Lyrics like "I can't stop this feeling deep inside of me, girl you just don't realize what you do to me" and "When you hold me in your arms so tight, you let me know that everything's alright" are so similar to Ben's thoughts that one could easily mistake them for something that was said by him in the book. And I think that this mentality reflects Ben's feelings towards Dallas throughout the book.
-Thomas Bradler

I think this song is a fit for deadline because when Ben is told he will only have a year to live he decides to not let it affect him as much as he can and to do what he wants. I think that while Ben knew his time restraints he also sort of forgot about it at times while also having it in he back of his head as he was experiencing life he made great connections with people he cared about but still had to say his goodbyes eventually. In the story here are a few characters that die before they get to live their full lives and thus are forever young.
- Holden Wacker

Taking a moment to sit back and admire that you still have time- even if it's not a lot. According to Nate Ruess this song was inspired by a memorable moment in his life. This song can be related to the book because Ben knew he had to make the most of the time he had left, so he decided to fight with teachers, try out for football, shoot his shot with his girl, and continue with a new perspective on his life. -Aislynn Sias

I chose this song because I think it coordinates to the unsaid thoughts/feelings Ben is having throughout the book. It’s such a simple song, first listen, but as you pay attention to the words the more you understand. I think that’s exactly what Ben represents, a better understanding. “…I’m sorry I haven’t been myself, And somethings got me down, What it is, I cannot tell…” These lyrics stand out the most because all he wanted was to seem normal for his remaining days, so Ben kept his illness to himself. There are multiple lyrics in this specific song that catch the eye, and remind me of Ben/Deadline. I think that this song also represents the small things in Bens life that he got to witness and enjoy. - Emilee Stewart

In “Deadline” by Chris Crutcher everyone experiences a death they never thought they’d have to encounter. I chose “How to Save a Life” by The Fray because of the lyrics “ Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend somewhere along in the bitterness and I would have stayed up with you all night had I known how to save a life” I chose this song because it represents if everyone would have known Ben was dying they would have spent more time with him. If Ben’s friends could have cured him and saved his life they would have without a doubt. The lyrics “I lost a friend somewhere along in the bitterness” represents on how Dallas reacted to the news of Ben dying. She was bitter and I don’t believe she understood how quickly he was going to die. They all lost a friend which is a terrible feeling for your brain to go through. This is why I chose the song “How to Save a Life” by The Fray to represent the characters and plot of “Deadline” by Chris Crutcher.

Written by: Tony Aviles

At the beginning of the book, Ben Wolfe gets diagnosed with a terminal illness being the closest he's been to "heavens door." In the song "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" it talks about how you're against,"your tattered libido. The bank and the mortician," Ben wants to have a street named after Malcolm X and his teacher stands in his way. Ben made friendships learning about Malcolm X like Rudy. Death comes in pairs and it happens multiple times before Ben passes away, but eventually he pulls through. The song is really great and moving and speaks about the time where the artist felt like dying and made the best out of it and got better. At the end of the book, it says he's starting to lose weight and getting sicker and really is starting to knock on heavens door. -Wyatt Herron

In "Deadline" Ben Wolf is a high school senior that finds out he has an illness that gives him one year to live. I chose this song, because it reminds me of how Ben likes Dallas Suzuki. He has liked her for a long time but always felt that he could never get her to pay attention to him. They finally end up together, but Ben negates to tell her that he's dying. So, when he does tell her that he's dying, she tells him to get out and not come back. They don't talk for a while. Ben regrets not telling Dallas sooner than he did.

in the book, "deadline" ben kind of falls in love with Dallas and I feel this song correlates because he's in love with her. "I just wanted you to watch me dissolve, slowly
In a pool full of your love But I don't even know how the chemistry works When you're poolside Kicking in the dirt, kicking in the sand And stirring up trouble" taken as falling in love and not know how to make it work like when ben doesn't know what to do about wanting to be with her but he's dying

In the book "Deadline" Ben chose refused treatment for his terminal illness and instead chose to live the rest of his life with no regrets. In "Top of My Game" Lil Tjay talks about how he had a rough childhood and how he had to deal with many of his friends and family dying at early age. Lil Tjay didn't know how long he would live so instead of worrying about that he chose to chase his dream and it ended up paying off as he became one of the biggest rappers. This song relates to Ben because even though Ben knows that he is going to die sometime that year he didn't let that stop him from dating his crush, joining the football team, or trying to battle the bigotry in his hometown by naming a street after Malcolm X. Instead of feeling down Ben felt as though he was at the Top of his game.
-Alexis Lozano
