1. School and District buy-in: It is necessary that the school and district together agree to implement reform and commit to stick with the implementation. Many times districts begin some type of reform and change the next year when something new comes out. It is important to make the commitment and follow through.
2. Support from leadership - leaders need to support teachers by providing them the necessary professional development in order for teachers to be successful when implementing reform.
3. Community support - As well as leadership supporting teachers, the community/parents need to provide positive support to the teachers and principals while implementing something new.

The most important step in the SIP process, I feel, is analyzing the data. It's important to analyze the data correctly to find patterns and causes for problems in order to identify a process for improvement.

There relationship between professional development and instructional strategies used for student learning is that during professional development, teachers collaborate, learn new instructional strategies and engage in how to use those strategies. Teachers then can take what they've learned, and how they learned it (collaborate, reflective practice) and apply it to the classroom.

State assessment results are important when developing a SIP. However, there are other types of data that are equally important. Classroom and district data and assessments, qualitative data such as attendance rates and student performance are important to analyze when formulating a SIP.

Personally, for my needs I would like to use a data carousel. As a literacy coach, analyzing classroom data and performance and helping teachers provide strategies to help students increase their achievement in reading and writing is part of my job. I feel data dashboards are useful when looking at school wide data to see patterns across the school.

One idea I think is extremely important from Chapter 4 is looking at the Common Core standards closely to ensure you are teaching the standard correctly. It is imperative to look at the unpacking documents and make sure your lessons/activities are addressing the standard appropriately and in depth. Many times teachers think they are addressing the standard but don't look at the unpacking documents to see what the standard explicitly asks the students to be able to do.

"School culture is one of the most important parts of a SIP because it decides how well the plan is received and implemented. However, after looking at the study done by Fernandez and our own SIP, I also realize that including the community and parents in the SIP is just as important." This is a statement from one of my peers and mirrors my own statement. Research shows school culture and student achievement are directly linked. School culture must be looked at in order to ensure a rise in student achievement. Other parts of the SIP can be followed, but if school culture isn't looked at I don't feel much improvement will be noted.

The most important point I learned in the School Improvement process is that it takes an organized team to develop a School Improvement Plan. There are many steps to be followed and it's not up to the principal to create the plan. The Leadership Team needs to be comprised of people in different areas that make up the culture of the school. The team needs to be able to collaborate well together in order accomplish the task successfully.
