Two major sites of Bosnia and Herzegovina are the Old Bridge
Area of the Old City of Mostar and the historic urban site of Počitelj. The
town of Mostar was built in the 15th and 16th centuries,
and was known for its old Turkish houses and Old Bridge, Stari Most, before its
destruction in 1993. It was recently rebuilt in 2002, and with its
“pre-Ottoman, eastern Ottoman, Mediterranean and western European architectural
features” it currently stands as an example of the diverse culture of the city.
The reconstruction of the city and the bridge is a “symbol of reconciliation,
international co-operation and of the coexistence of diverse cultural, ethnic
and religious communities.” It stands as a monument of the history and
acceptance of diversity in the country.

The site of Počitelj was the administrative center for
Dubrava župa (a county), and it is believed the town was built by King Stjepan
Tvrtko I in 1383. The town has three significant periods: between 1463 and
1471, when the town had “strategic importance,”; between 1471 and 1698 when the
town was under the Ottoman Empire and developed buildings such as mosques,
mekteb (Muslim primary school), imaret (charitable kitchen), medresa (Muslim
high school), hamam, Turkish baths, han (inn) and sahat-kula (clock-tower); and
between 1698 and 1878, when the town recovered its strategic importance after
being conquered by the Venetians. In 2000, a program promising the permanent
protection of Počitelj was created, consisting of yed buildings, returns of the
refugees and displaced persons to their homes and the sustainable and long-term
protection and revitalization of the Historic urban area of Počitelj. The
program was created after Počitelj was named one of the world's 100 most
endangered cultural heritage sites. The fact that Počitelj’s culture is being
reserved is a representation of the country’s need to keep its history intact.

Situation is the relative location of a place or activity in
relation to the physical and cultural characteristics of the larger regional or
spatial system of which it is a part.

Croatia has recently joined the EU (European Union), and
this has affected trade between Croatia and Bosnia, effecting Bosnia in a negative
way. The country already has a poor economy, and with Croatia a part of the EU,
Bosnia has lost its main market for its farming exports. Many farms will have
to shut down due to the fact that they have no one to sell to. Bosnia cannot
sell to Croatia once it’s a part of the EU because the country cannot meet the
EU’s hygiene codes.

An example of Human-Environment interaction in Bosnia and
Herzegovina is Humans as Modifiers. Deforestation is taking place in the
forests of Bosnia and robbing the country of its most valuable resource- wood –
and the lack of government regulations on the matter is making business in
selling valuable wood such as oak, pine and beech extremely easy. Humans are
able to take from the environment what they need (wood) for their own personal
gains (money).

its three national official languages (Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian), it’s
meat and potato rich foods, and it’s acceptance of religion (Three main
religions: Roman Catholicism, Serbian Orthodox, and Islam). Examples of the Physical
Attributes of Place are it’s generally mountainous terrain (exceptions to the
flatter part of the north, which contains numerous river valleys) and its
climate. In the winter, the mountains will be cold along with the city of
Sarajevo, but the coast will have a mostly temperate climate. Spring and fall
are unpredictable due to the fact that snow can come early fall or late spring
due to the mountain ranges, and the summer is mostly temperate.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is currently facing many
environmental issues: air pollution, water shortges, and deforestation. These
issues tie in with Possibilism (Environmental Determinism can also be argued to
tie in with this event), because these issues could limit the way Bosnians live
their lives because of the inability to grow crops, dehydration, shortages of
wood to sell meaning less money.
