Rio is 23 degrees south of the equator and 43 degrees west of the prime meridian. Rio is southeast of Belo Horizonte and east of São Paulo. Rio's main religion is Catholicism. Carnival is a huge festival that is an annual tradition for everybody in brazil. The Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro is a world famous festival held before Lent every year and considered the biggest carnival in the world with two million people per day on the streets.

Rio has a beautiful statue of Christ the Redeemer in the center in the west side of Rio. Rio is on the Brazilian and Atlantic Ocean coastline.

Beautiful Beaches

The beaches in Rio are hardly ever empty, Rios beaches are like cafes in Paris. They practically define the city. From foxy Ipanema and Copoacabana, to more secluded beaches like Prainha beach, there are lots of activities to do. Playing beach volleyball is where it's at. If you're not playing volleyball with Brazilians on a beach, you have not yet experienced the true meaning of life. The beaches can become pretty polluted due to the number of cars and factories located here, human environmentalists say that the pollution has gone down a large percentage but there are still beaches that can be closed down because of the polluted fog and acid rains.

The Southeast isn't only for rednecks

Rio state is located in the southeastern region of brazil. The southeast is the richest region of the country. The southeast leads brazil in population, vehicles, industries, universities, airports, ports, highways, hospitals, schools and number of houses. Rio is a node because not only do the cities surrounding Rio depend on it but brazil depends on Rio for 60% of their GDP. People might percept Rio as being a rich tourist city if they didn't research it.

Rio's population is made up of all different ethnicities such as Portuguese, white, Latino, and African. The dominant language is Portuguese. Most are Catholic, although many follow Afro-Brazilian religions like Umbanda and Condomble. All races dance to the same beat of the samba and other Afro-Brazilian sounds. The beach, especially in Rio, is the great equalizer. Here, where just about everybody wears skimpy swimsuits, it is difficult to pinpoint the elite from the poorer people. The spatial actions between São Paulo, Rio, and Minas Gerais generate the general income for Brazil. The friction of distance in Rio is, or distance decay, is the exact opposite that you would generally think. Rio has a lot of issues with crime and pollution, but when you get there it is almost as if those problems don't exist, it's because when u go to Rio it's to forget your problems at home so the farther away from home you get the less you worry and think about the problems you left behind. The time-space compression is evident in Rio because there are so many different cultures flying around everywhere, ther is Spanish-Brazilian, Afro-Brazilian, Native Brazilian and many more, one day in Rio makes you fell like you have traveled most of the world in 4 hours. Rio makes it feel like the world is getting smaller everyday.
