Located in the Northwest part of the Municipality of Valongo and half a dozen kilometers from the city of Porto, Ermesinde faces to the North with the parish of S. Pedro Fins (Maia), to the West with the parish of Águas Santas (Maia), to the East with the parish of Valongo, to the northeast with the parish of Alfena and to the south with the parish of Baguim do Monte (Gondomar).

Crossed by the Leça River (which here stretches lazily in a calm and sprawling course), and covering an area of approximately seven square kilometers, this city has a slightly rugged topography, with an average altitude of around ninety meters. Its highest point is in Lugar da Formiga (around 140 meters high), while the lowest point will be reached in the places of Cancela and Bravagem.

The few references that exist about its remote past tell us that the former parish of S. Lourenço de Asmes became officially known as Ermesinde after the establishment of the Republic (1910). It is known that in 1911 the Parish Council of S. Lourenço de Asmes, as it was then known, chaired by Amadeu Vilar, requested the Provisional Government that the official name of the village be Ermezinde.

Ermesinde was elevated to the category of Town on June 12, 1938. On October 27, 1979, the Administrative Neighborhood of Ermesinde was created, whose area of intervention, defined by the City Council Executive, also extended to the Parish of Alfena. On July 13, 1990, the Assembly of the Republic, unanimously, approved the transformation of Ermesinde into a city.
