How? The patient was first presented in a large study for yellow fever virus, however they new this virus was something new they discovered because pathology was primary in the Central Nervous System, showing its neurotropic nature

WNV is a member of the flavivirus genus and belongs to the Japanese  encephalitis antigenic complex of Flaviviridae.  WNV was first identified in birds and was not considered pathogenic for birds until a more violent strain of the virus caused death, encephalitis, or paralysis in birds.
