"Then they threw another bomb in and the bus began to burn with the people still inside, because throughout all this the men had had to lie on the floor of the bus because if they had left, they would have been killed." Group 3: Vanessa, Fredy, Sergio, and Fabian

We chose this passage because it shows the extreme violence and fear experienced by the characters. It highlights the brutality of the authorities and the helplessness of the people trapped in the bus. This moment is heartbreaking and intense, showing the harsh reality faced by those living through the conflict.

"They envy our uniforms, the fact that we've gotten ahead in life" (Argueta, 98) "They exist to boss the poor around. To order the poor about, to beat up on the poor and to carry them off as if they were animals" (Argueta, 100). These two quotes show two opposing perspectives between the people and the authorities. The authorities feel entitled to have power and control over the poor whereas the people see the power of the authorities as an abuse. Their people's rights are being violated, and their community has been taken in control over what's theirs. In addition, one thing the poor has and not the authorities is the ability to stand for what's right and defend their community.

"We have buried all the dogs that have died on us; we never leave them for buzzards to eat. In case they have souls, we won't fall into sin" (Argueta 113). This section of the reading is mostly about the juxtaposition between the narrator and the guards that oppress them. In this passage, the narrator shows compassion to dogs. On the other hand, when the guards are talking, they do not show this same compassion. At one point they even go so far as to talk about shooting one and the only reason he hasn't already was because it would be too loud. This reading shows the difference between the everyday people and the guards as well as the cruelty and apathy that the guards show.

It shows how fear and suspicion controlled people's daily lives, forcing them to suppress their emotions to avoid being accused of disloyalty.

"Are they going to stop being the authorities who tramp all about spying? Is this going to happen when they finish off the poor?(Argueta pg.177). "And if we are frightened, frightened of being left alone, we go on just the same. We won't let their cruelties, craziness and killings bother us."(Argueta Pg.177). We selected those two quotes because it describes the section 161-189 was about. This section was about the violent acts that occur by authorities and how normal citizens live in fear of what the authorities might do to them. It goes into how the authorities overuse their power and the brutal things that happen to people who resist them.

"That's all we needed in this life. From that moment on, any sin was going to seem petty" (Argueta 30). This encapsulates the assigned pages the most, because it gives context to the importance of religion that these people have and shows that it was taken away from them. The last line especially hits the hardest since all other sins would seem pale in comparison to brutalizing a priest -- to harm one's faith not only on a spiritual level but a physical one. This highlights the harsh realities that these people went through and the resilience required.

"I always cross myself in the presence of the morning star. With the Lord I go to sleep, with the Lord I awake. You do it by habit. I don't know why, but when sunlight begins to fade, I start to get anxious; it just takes hold of me, all of a sudden, this sense of desperation" (Argueta, 8)

We chose this passage because as they found the well for water, they were grateful to have a source so close while others have to walk more than half a mile to reach the river. It showed how the narrator notices them praying and appreciating the little things that are going their way.
