While Variola Major and Variola Minor both cause Smallpox, Variola Major is responsible for a larger number of cases.&nbsp;It is part of the orthopoxvirus family.</div>]]></description>

In July 2018, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved tecovirimat (also referred to as ST-246 or its brand name Tpoxx) as the first drug with an indication for treatment of smallpox. Those affected may also get the smallpox vaccine in order to relieve their symptoms. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1. It has been used as a weapon in war. British forces gave American Indians blankets contaminated with smallpox during the French and Indian Wars (1754 to 1767) and it was employed as a biological weapon. The Soviet Union developed variola in the 1980s as an aerosol biological weapon and prepared tons of virus-filled material for intercontinental ballistic missile delivery.&nbsp;<br>2. Smallpox has been eradicated in the United States for nearly 80 years with the last natural outbreak occurring in 1949. However, it was not until 1980 that the World Health Assembly declared its elimination to be worldwide.&nbsp;<br>3. Due to the lack of treatments for smallpox, it killed 30 percent of those affected. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>While smallpox and chickenpox have similar symptoms, there are still key differences. Smallpox has been eliminated completely, yet chickenpox is still around. Chickenpox consists of itchy rashes and fever, just like smallpox, but is a lot more mild. Most who are infected with chickenpox survive with a few simple scars, while 3 out of 10 who were infected with smallpox did not survive at all. </div>]]></description>
