Have you ever heard of Julius Ceaser, the famous war general and senate ? Well let me tell you a little about him. He took control of Rome in 49 B.C and became dictator of life in 44 B.C. He had a friend who he fought with in war, whose name was Pompey. Ceaser adopted a son named Octavian who later became the first Roman emperor and took the name Augustus. As time went on, the citizens thought Ceaser was too powerful. Pompey became jealous and turned against him. When he tried to rebel, Ceaser drove Pompey all the way to Egypt where he was finally defeated. When Julius returned, the citizens planed a murder. He was stabbed many times and eventually died. Julius Ceaser ended up becoming one of the most famous Romans of his time.

Did you know the reason why the Roman empire was so big? It was because of their army. The army was separated into 60 different groups called a legion. A legion consists about 5,000 soldiers, 10 cohorts each with 6 centuries which each have about 80 men. Legions were also backed up by auxiliary troops. Legionary's had helmets and cuirass to protect the upper portion. The usual weapons were a spear, a short sword and a dagger. One thing that made the army nearly unstoppable is the tortoise. The legionary's would form a big rectangle. the men on the sides would hold their shields to the in front, behind or to the side. The men in the middle would hold their shields up. If a bowman or archer tried to shoot them, BANG it would bounce of the shields. Hopefully know you realize how powerful the Roman army was.

Do you know what Rome is most famous for? It's their architecture. The city had many beautiful public baths, temples and stadiums. The two most famous buildings were the Pantheon. A huge temple made for the Greek goddess Athena. It has the largest dome in the world. It was mostly made of concrete. The other building is called the Colosseum which is a huge stadium seating 50,000+. Here you can see gladiators fight, mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. These buildings are now part of world famous architectural history.
