DGBLL = Digital Game-Based Language Learners.
The purpose of DGBLL is to have games whose main focus is on learning a second language. Why must learning be boring? Jazz it up by getting crafty on your app store, and see what idioms, phrases and vocabulary you can pick up!

DGBLL is a form of CALL Package (i.e. computer-assisted Language learning platform eg: Duolingo) and it's benefits can be huge, for example: on many games you can play multi-player with gamers from all over the world in various languages (Cornille et al, 2012)- this is a perfect example and opportunity as to how you can expose yourself to different languages through digital technology and games today!

Bibliography:
Frederik Cornillie, Steven L.

Learning a language by playing a game just seems too good to be true. Hence I have critically analysed an example of a GOOD game and a BAD game (in my opinion) for learning languages. So lets start with a helpful DGBLL:

(1.) 4 PICS, 1 WORD:
I think this app/game is a perfect example of a CALL package whose aim is to educate players with new vocabulary. The game presents the player with four pictures which share a common theme, and the player must guess the word. It is a useful game if you want to bulk up your vocab in another language as the game is not complex or difficult to understand; and once you start, you go up levels so it can become addictive.

So here's an example of a DGBLL game which I do not think would be beneficial to a L2 Learner:
(1.) Farmville:
Farmville is not the best option for a language learner in my opinion. I think that the game has a huge fan-base and has so many users already, that it is constantly being updated to better the enjoyment of the game - not those playing it for educational purposes.. the game has so many different features for gamers, but there is not such a big emphasis put on communication. You're not constantly communicating with other players and thus, you could spend much of your time sorting out your farm as opposed to learning new languages!!! I would definitely recommend reconsidering your choice of game if the soul purpose it to benefit your L2.
