Generally speaking, my students improved scores on the the PDE and the SWE. There seemed to be greater gains on the sight word efficiency than on the phonemic decoding efficiency, and I though that was pretty interesting and wondered why that is. One instructional strategy that have used since the beginning of the year to provide students with ample practice on phonemic awareness is replacing and substituting beginning, middle, and ending sounds in words to create new words.

I have seen gains with my students comprehension scores. More students scored appropriate instead of below. In the Fall I had 9 either above or appropriate, and in the winter I had 12 students either above or appropriate. Small gains, but gains!

Overall, the students showed a great deal of improvement. The most notable being in the comprehension on the grade level passage. Sixteen of the eighteen assessed answered 4 or 5 correctly. Additionally, more students were able to finish reading the passage in the allotted time.

Dedy has seen improvement with most students. Some students almost doubled their scores on the TOWRE assessment since the fall in the SWE. While others either maintained or grew by only a few points on PDE. Surprisingly, the fluency passage for winter seemed difficult in my opinion. However, some of my students rose to the challenge while almost doubling the total number of words read from the fall!!! The number of miscues also reduced!! Although, the comprehension remained the same from fall to winter, bummer. This time I 10 students that were able to be tested in the WW stage, last time only 3 students were able to test in that stage. The ones that

I have seen gains from three to 10 points on the DSA for most students. The true picture comes from the feature analysis. As a class we have reached proficiency with beginning and ending consonants and made strong improvements with medial vowel sounds. I still do not find the fluency passage to be a valid assessment for 1st grade.

I noticed improvement in my students on the TOWRE assessments. My students were able to use decoding strategies and phonemic awareness to read the words in each list. Students have been working closely with phonemic deletion and substitution as well as making words lessons.

Most of my students in my class showed growth on the DSA. At the beginning of the year, I had 7 students who struggled with phonemic awareness. Only one students still needs instruction in phonemic awareness.
