One instructional strategy that have used since the beginning of the year to provide students with ample practice on phonemic awareness is replacing and substituting beginning, middle, and ending sounds in words to create new words.

A lot of them scored Proficient in all 3 categories. I was very proud of their accomplishments!

The most notable being in the comprehension on the grade level passage. Sixteen of the eighteen assessed answered 4 or 5 correctly. Some students almost doubled their scores on the TOWRE assessment since the fall in the SWE. While others either maintained or grew by only a few points on PDE. Surprisingly, the fluency passage for winter seemed difficult in my opinion. However, some of my students rose to the challenge while almost doubling the total number of words read from the fall!!! The number of miscues also reduced!! Although, the comprehension remained the same from fall to winter, bummer. This time I 10 students that were able to be tested in the WW stage, last time only 3 students were able to test in that stage. The true picture comes from the feature analysis. As a class we have reached proficiency with beginning and ending consonants and made strong improvements with medial vowel sounds.
