As a child who grew up with technology, I have been using Google for so, so many years. Yet, I didn't know about search operators at all. To think of the hours I could've saved in middle school or high school if I knew how to optimize my search... Search optimization involves including only key words in your search and using search operators like AND, MINUS, site:, filetype: and more to significantly narrow down your search and get the results you want quickly and efficiently. During class, we also analysed the credibility of certain websites in groups, which was very interesting and educational. Although I had heard terms like 'Digital Footprint', 'Cookies', 'Malware' and 'Phishing' before, I never knew what they really meant until this module. I learnt how cookies are an essential part of your digital footprint and that it is important to be aware of what information you let websites gather and use when you accept cookies. It is also important to have strong passwords, have 2-factor authentications on important accounts, use trusted anti-virus software, and back up information regularly. We also covered basic email etiquette. As someone who has never done any coding, this was definitely a great start to that journey. I learnt the basics of creating HTML webpages and also how to design them using CSS. I practiced various elements of HTML and CSS from adding basic headings and paragraphs to adding images and links, and creating lists and tables. I also learnt to change fonts of the text and add colour to my website. During class, we were given certain code files that had errors that we needed to rectify. Excel had always seemed so daunting and although I had been using it to track my expenses since I got to FLAME, that was about all I knew how to do - add text and numbers to the sheet. Now I can use different formulas such as SUM, MEAN, MODE, MEDIAN for my data. I can efficiently place data in tables and use functions like filter, VLOOKUP and XLOOKUP to search for exactly what I need. I can also create PivotTables to only include the data that is required for a specific purpose. I can also create different types of charts. I learnt so many helpful things from this module. This is an extremely relevant topic, especially these days with the rise of ChatGPT in the educational sphere. Although it is useful, how ethical is it? Arificial Intelligence, through complex algorithms and mathematical functions, is trained to serve us, humans. So, it is up to us, the organisations and designers who create such software or machines, to train AI in such a way that they know important ethical principles and also perform their function in an efficient way. Moreover, Generative AI is where creative genius and ethics get muddled. Essentially, Generative AI is stealing from work that already exists that was created by humans, but it is also able to provide such accurate results, in most situations.
