MATTHEW THE TAX COLLECTOR

by Harsh Kumar

My name was Levi before Jesus’ call. Matthew is a shortening of the name Mattathias,

which means "gift of Yahweh," or simply "the gift of God."

I threw a great farewell feast at my home in Capernaum, on the day when Jesus invited me to follow him. I invited my friends so they could meet Jesus too,

From that time on, instead of collecting tax money, I collected souls for Christ.

Despite my sinful past, I was uniquely qualified to be a disciple.I was an accurate

record keeper and keen observer of people. I captured the smallest details. Those traits served me well when I wrote the Gospel of Matthew some 20 years later.

By surface appearances, it was scandalous and offensive for Jesus to pick a tax collector as one of his closest followers, since we were widely hated by the Jews. Yet of the four Gospel writers, I presented Jesus to the Jews as their hoped-for Messiah, tailoring his account to answer their questions.

I displayed one of the most radically changed lives in the Bible in response to an

invitation from Jesus. I did not hesitate; I did not look back. I left behind a life of wealth

and security for poverty and uncertainty. I abandoned the pleasures of this world for the promise of eternal life.

I preached for 15 years in Jerusalem following the death and resurrection of Jesus, then went out on the mission field to other countries.I died as a martyr for the cause of Christ.I was martyred in Ethiopia.I was slain with a halberd in the city of Nabadar.

MY ACCOMPLISHMENTS

I served as one of the 12 disciples of Jesus Christ. As an eyewitness to the Savior, I

recorded a detailed account of Jesus' life, the story of his birth, his message and his many deeds in my Gospel. I also served as a missionary, spreading the good news to other countries.

MY STRENGTHS

I was an accurate record keeper. I knew the human heart and the longings of the Jewish people. I was loyal to Jesus and once committed, I never wavered in serving the Lord.

MY WEAKNESSES

Before I met Jesus, I was greedy. I thought money was the most important thing in

life and violated God's laws to enrich himself at the expense of his countrymen.

LIFE LESSONS

God can use anyone to help him in his work. We should not feel unqualified because of our appearance, lack of education, or our past. Jesus looks for sincere commitment. We should also remember that the highest calling in life is serving God, no matter what the world says. Money, fame, and power cannot compare with being a follower of Jesus Christ.

HOMETOWN

Capernaum

MY OCCUPATION

Tax collector, disciple of Jesus Christ, gospel writer, missionary.

FAMILY TREE

Father - Alphaeus

Judas Iscariot -

By Bryan Anthony .

I am Judas Iscariot. I was among the twelve disciples. I'm well known for betraying Jesus (unintentionally) yes I was unaware that I was handing him over to be killed I was remorseful later. Hence, now throughout the world my name is followed by the term traitor. I was greedy, and there were political desires had lurked beneath me.

Hometown:

Kerioth. The hebrew word Ishkeriyyoth (for Iscariot) means " man of the village of Keriyyoth." Kerioth was about 15 miles south of Hebron, in Israel.

Family tree:

Father: Simon Iscariot.

Accomplishments:

I was originally among the twelve disciples. I travelled with Jesus, learnt new things, I had an opportunity to eat with Jesus, and I had enough faith to cast out demons and cure people along with the eleven.

Strengths:

I felt remorse after handing over Jesus to be killed, I later went to get my Lord. I gave the 30 pieces of silver back to the chief priest and elders ( Mathew 27:3)

Weaknesses:

I was thief. And I was in charge of our group's money bag, I often stole from it. I was disloyal. Even though the other disciples deserted Jesus, Peter denied Him, but I did something even worse, I lead the temple guards to Gethsemane and kissed Jesus to indicate to the guards that He was the one they were searching. I loved Jesus and didn't want him to die I was unaware of it and yet I've made the biggest error in the history of man kind. I couldn't bear that pain and I ended up committing suicide

Life lessons:

An outward show of love towards Jesus is meaningless because he knows your heart so love Him from the depth of your heart. In this world it is not easy to follow Christ completely because the devil hinders your path and leads you to betray Jesus. For this we must ask the Holy Spirit to guide us and help us face these problems.

By Iwan

Me as an Apostle was one of the earliest followers of Jesus Christ. Some scholars speculate that
I was first a disciple of John the Baptist, because he lived in the region where John
preached.
Like Peter and Peter's brother Andrew, I was a Galilean, from the village of Bethsaida. It's
probable they knew one another and were friends.
Jesus issued a personal call to me: "Follow me." (John 1:43, NIV).
Leaving his old life behind, Philip answered the call. He may have been among the disciples with
Jesus at the wedding feast in Cana, when Christ performed his first miracle, turning water into
wine.
I recruited the skeptical Nathanael (Bartholomew) as an apostle, leading Jesus to reveal that
I supernaturally saw Nathanael sitting under a fig tree, even before I called him.
In the miracle of the feeding of the 5,000, Jesus tested me by asking him where they could
buy bread for so many people. Limited by his earthbound experience, I replied that eight
months' wages would not be enough to buy each person one bite.
The last we hear of me as an Apostle is in the book of Acts, at Jesus' ascension and the Day of
Pentecost. Another Philip is mentioned in Acts, a deacon and evangelist, but he is a different
person. Tradition says me as an Apostle preached in Phrygia, in Asia Minor, and was martyred
there at Hierapolis.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
I learned the truth about the kingdom of God at the feet of Jesus, then preached the gospel
after Jesus' resurrection and ascension.

MY STRENGTHS
I fervently sought the Messiah and recognized that Jesus was the promised Savior, even
though I did not fully understand until after Jesus' resurrection.

MY WEAKNESSES
Like the other apostles, I deserted Jesus during his trial and crucifixion.

LIFE LESSONS
Starting with John the Baptist, I sought the path to salvation, which led me to Jesus Christ.
Eternal life in Christ is available to anyone who desires it.

HOMETOWN
Bethsaida, in Galilee.

Thomas the Doubter

Shannen Nadeem

I am Didymus Thomas Judas also more commonly known as doubting Thomas. I belong to Galilee Israel. I am the person who infamously denied to believe that Jesus had resurrected until I had touched His wounds. But then Jesus appeared in front of me and invited me to feel His wounds and after I had felt them He said "Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed."
<var>
</var>
My work

I traveled with Jesus and learnt from him for 3 years. Afterwards I traveled to India where I baptized many people and I am known as the Patron Saint of India and the people that follow me are known as Saint Thomas Christians. God performed many miracles through me in order to help the people with whom I shared the Gospel of the Lord - In Syria, Persia, India, Indonesia, etc. - according to Christian tradition. I carried the Gospel to the west and was eventually martyred by the king of India, who's wife had become a Christian due to my influence, for not offering sacrifice to an idol.

My Strengths

When Jesus' life was at risk by returning to Judea after Lazarus had died, I courageously told my fellow disciples that we should go with Jesus no matter what the danger, we must overcome the obstacles in our path in order to be closer to Jesus.

My Weaknesses

My main weakness as everyone is aware of is that I refused to believe that Jesus had resurrected despite my fellow apostles telling my that they had seen Him and had spoken to him. My faith was solely based on what I could see and feel. I too, like the other apostles, deserted Jesus during his crucifixion.

Life Lessons

Though everyone deserted Jesus at the cross, I am an exception from the rest since I put my doubt into words and relied on my senses rather than believing.
Jesus forgives everyone and is always willing to give people second chances, this is beautifully portrayed when Jesus forgives Thomas for his doubts and gives him a second chance.
In response to my doubts Jesus said that those who believe without seeing are the ones who are truly blessed.
Many of us nowadays are asking for proof for Jesus' resurrection just like Thomas did, however God provides us with the Bible which should suffice.

Hometown

I was born in Galilee Israel

Occupation

What I did to earn money before meeting Jesus is still unknown however after Jesus' ascension I became a Christian Missionary and a martyr.

John: 'The Disciple Jesus loved

By Saram ilyas

I Apostle John had the distinction of being a beloved friend of Jesus Christ, writer of five
books of the New Testament, and a pillar in the early Christian church.
Me and my brother James, another disciple of Jesus, were fishermen on the Sea of Galilee when
Jesus called us to follow him. We later became part of Christ's inner circle, along with the
Apostle Peter. We three (Peter, James, and John) were privileged to be with Jesus at the
raising of Jairus' daughter from the dead, at the transfiguration, and during Jesus' agony in Gethsemane.
On one occasion, when a Samaritan village rejected Jesus, me and my brother James asked if we should call down fire from heaven to destroy the place. That earned us the nickname "sons of thunder."
A previous relationship with Joseph Caiaphas allowed me to be present in the high priest's
house during Jesus' trial. On the cross, Jesus entrusted the care of his mother, Mary, to an
unnamed disciple, probably me, and I took her into his my home.
Some scholars speculate that I may have been a cousin of Jesus.
I served the church in Jerusalem for many years, then moved to work in the church at
Ephesus. An unsubstantiated legend holds that I was taken to Rome during a persecution and
thrown into boiling oil but emerged unhurt.
The Bible tells us that I was later exiled to the island of Patmos. I supposedly outlived all
of the disciples, dying of old age at Ephesus.
My Gospel is strikingly different from Matthew, Mark, and Luke, the three Synoptic Gospels, I continually emphasizes that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of God, sent by the Father to take
away the sins of the world. He uses many symbolic titles for Jesus, such as the Lamb of God,
resurrection, and the vine.
Throughout my gospel, Jesus uses the phrase "I am," unmistakably identifying himself
with Jehovah, the Great "I AM" or eternal God.
Although I does not mention myself by name in my own gospel, but refers to myself 4 times as "the disciple Jesus loved.”

ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE APOSTLE JOHN

I was one of the first disciples chosen. I was an elder in the early church and helped spread
the gospel message. I was Credited with writing the Gospel of John; the letters 1 John, 2 John,
and 3 John; and the book of Revelation. I was a member of the inner circle of three who
accompanied Jesus even when the others were absent. Paul called me one of the pillars of the
Jerusalem church:
...and when James and Cephas and I , who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was
given to me, they gave the right hand of fellowship to Barnabas and me, that we should go to the
Gentiles and they to the circumcised. Only, they asked us to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do

MY STRENGTHS

I was especially loyal to Jesus. I was the only one of the 12 apostles present at the cross.
After Pentecost, I teamed up with Peter to fearlessly preach the gospel in Jerusalem and
suffered beatings and imprisonment for it.
I underwent a remarkable transformation as a disciple, from the quick-tempered Son of
Thunder to the compassionate apostle of love. Because I experienced the unconditional love
of Jesus firsthand, I preached that love in his gospel and letters.

JOHN'S WEAKNESSES

At times, I did not understand Jesus' message of forgiveness, as when he asked to call fire
down upon unbelievers. He also asked for a favored position in Jesus' kingdom.

LIFE LESSONS FROM MY LIFE

Christ is the Savior who offers every person eternal life. If we follow Jesus, we are assured of
forgiveness and salvation. As Christ loves us, we are to love others. God is love, and we, as
Christians, are to be channels of God's love to our neighbour.

Hometown
Capernaum

REFERENCES TO JOHN THE APOSTLE IN THE BIBLE

I am mentioned in the four Gospels, the book of Acts, and as the narrator of Revelation.
OCCUPATION
Fisherman, a disciple of Jesus, evangelist, Scripture author.

FAMILY TREE
Father - Zebedee
Mother - Salome
Brother - James

By Brennon

I and my name means "manly," i am the first apostle of Jesus Christ. i have previously been a follower of John the Baptist, but when John proclaimed Jesus "the lamb of God," i went with Jesus and spent a day with him. i quickly found my brother Simon (later called Peter) and told him "We have found the Messiah." (John 1:41, NIV) i brought Simon to meet Jesus. Matthew notes that Simon and i dropped our fishing nets and followed Jesus as he was passing by. The Gospels record three episodes involving me.i and three other disciples asked Jesus about his prophecy that the Temple would be torn down (Mark 13:3-4). i brought a boy with two fish and five barley loaves to Jesus, who multiplied them to feed 5,000 people (John 6:8-13). Philip and i brought some Greeks to Jesus who wanted to meet him (John 12:20-22). It is not recorded in the Bible, but church tradition says Andrew was crucified as a martyr on a Crux Decussata, or X-shaped cross.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS ME : I brought people to Jesus. After Pentecost, i became a missionary like the other apostles and preached the gospel.

MY STRENGTHS:

I hungered for the truth.i He found it, first in John the Baptist, then in Jesus Christ. I am mentioned fourth in the list of disciples, indicating I stayed close to Jesus.

MY WEAKNESSES

Like the other apostles, I abandoned Jesus during his trial and crucifixion.

Simon Peter- The Rock

~ Abraham Khokhar

I am Peter, one of the most prominent characters in the Gospels, a rough and tumble man who usually gets into trouble because of his emotions, yet I'm still one of Jesus' favorite apostle because of my big heart.
My real name is Simon. With my brother Andrew, I was a follower of John the Baptist. When Andrew introduced me to Jesus of Nazareth, Jesus renamed me to the Greek word for rock, "petros", this became my new name, Peter.

I am the only Peter mentioned in the New Testament. My aggressiveness made me a natural spokesman for the twelve. Often, however, I spoke before I thought and my words let me to embarrassment.

Jesus included me in his inner circle when he took James, John and me into the house of Jairus, where Jesus raised Jairus' dead daughter. Later, I was among those same disciples Jesus chose to witness the transfiguration. Those same three saw Jesus' agony in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Most of you remember me for denying Christ three times during the night of Jesus' trial. After his resurrection, Jesus took special care to rehabilitate me and assure me I was forgiven.

At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit filled the apostles. Peter was so overcome that he began to preach to the crowd, there were 3000 people that converted that day. Through the remainder of that book, John and I were persecuted for are stand for Jesus. Early in my ministry, I preached only to Jews, but God gave me a vision in Joppa where a huge sheet containing all types of animals, warning him not to call anything made by God impure. I then baptized the Roman centurion Cornelius and hi household and understood that the gospel is for all people.

Tradition says that persecution of the first Christians in Jerusalem led Peter to Rome, where he spread the Gospel to the fledgling church there. Legend has it that the Romans were going crucify Peter, but he told them that he was not worthy to be executed in the same manner as Jesus, so he was crucified upside down. The Roman Catholic church claims Peter as its first Pope.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

After being invited by Jesus, I got out of the boat and for a brief moment walked on water. I correctly identified Jesus as the Messiah, not through my own knowledge but by the enlightment of the Holy Spirit. I was chosen by Jesus to witness the Transfiguration. After Pentecost, I boldly proclaimed the Gospel in Jerusalem, unafraid of arrest and persecution. Most scholars consider peter the eyewitness source for the Gospel of Mark. I also penned the books 1 Peter and 2 Peter.

STRENGTHS:

I was a fiercely loyal man. Like the other 11 apostles, I left my occupation to follow Jesus for three years learning from Him about the kingdom of Heaven. Once I was filled with the Holy Spirit after Pentecost, I was a fearless missionary of Christ.

WEAKNESSES:

I knew great fear and doubt. I let my passion rule me instead of the faith of God. During Jesus' final hours, I not only abandoned Jesus but denied three times that I even knew him.

LIFE LESSONS:

When we forget that God is in control, we overstep our limited authority. God works through us in spite of our human frailties. No offense is too great to be forgiven by God. We can accomplish great things when we put our faith in God instead of ourselves.

HOMETOWN:

Native of Bethsaida, settled in Capernaum.

OCCUPATION:

Fisherman, a leader in the early Church, missionary and an Epistle writer.

FAMILY TREE:

Father- Jonah
Brother- Andrew

Bartholomew - The True Israelite

By Sherwin Minhas

I was one of the 12 original apostles of Jesus Christ. Little is written about me in the Gospels and book of Acts. Most Bible scholars believe that me and Bartholomew were the same person. My other name which is Bartholomew is a family designation, meaning "son of Tolmai." Another name of me which is Nathaniel means "gift of God." In the synoptic Gospels, my name Bartholomew always follows Philip in lists of the Twelve. In the Gospel of John, my name Barthlomew is not mentioned at all; but my other name Nathanael is listed instead, after Philip. John also describes my call by Philip. We both may have been friends, Iscoff, "Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" (John 1:46, NIV) Seeing the two men approach, Jesus calls me a "true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false," then reveals that he saw me sitting under a fig tree before Philip called him. I respond to Jesus' vision by proclaiming him the Son of God, the King of Israel. Church tradition says that I carried a translation of Matthew's Gospel to northern India. Legend claims I was crucified upside down in Albania.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS :

I accepted Jesus' call and became his disciple. I witnessed the Ascension and became a missionary, spreading the gospel.

STRENGTHS:

Upon meeting Jesus for the first time, I overcame his skepticism about the insignificance of Nazareth and left his past behind.
APOSTLE JAMES-First Apostle to Die For Jesus

By Jotesh Kumar

I was honored with a favored position by Jesus Christ, as one of three men in his inner circle. The others were my brother John and Simon Peter. When Jesus called us, we were fishermen with our father Zebedee on the Sea of Galilee. We immediately left our father and our business to follow the young rabbi. I was probably the older of the two brothers because I am always mentioned first.

Three times me, John, and Peter were invited by Jesus to witness events no one else saw: the raising of the daughter of Jairus from the dead (Mark 5:37-47), the transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-3), and Jesus' agony in the Garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26:36-37).

But I was not above making mistakes. When a Samaritan village rejected Jesus, me and John wanted to call down fire from heaven upon the place. This earned us the nickname "Boanerges," or "sons of thunder." Our mother also overstepped her bounds, asking Jesus to grant us special positions in his kingdom.

My zeal for Jesus resulted in me being the first of the 12 apostles to be martyred. I was killed with the sword on order of King Herod Agrippa I of Judea, about 44 A.D., in a general persecution of the early church.

Two other men named James appear in the New Testament: James, the son of Alphaeus, another apostle; and James, the brother of the Lord, a leader in the Jerusalem church and author of the book of James.

MY ACCOMPLISHMENTS

I followed Jesus as one of the 12 disciples. I proclaimed the gospel after Jesus' resurrection and was martyred for my faith.

MY STRENGTHS

I was a loyal disciple of Jesus. I apparently had outstanding personal qualities that are not detailed in Scripture, because my character made him one of Jesus' favorites.

MY WEAKNESSES

With my brother John, I could be rash and unthinking. I did not always apply the gospel to earthly matters.

LIFE LESSONS FROM ME

Following Jesus Christ can lead to hardship and persecution, but the reward is eternal life with him in heaven.

HOMETOWN

Capernaum

REFERENCED IN THE BIBLE

I am mentioned in all four Gospels and my martyrdom is cited in Acts 12:2.

OCCUPATION

Fisherman, disciple of Jesus Christ.

FAMILY TREE:

Father - Zebedee

Mother - Salome

Brother - John

Meet James the Lesser

By Gohar I Nayab
I am called the lesser because I am small in stature. Some scholars believe that I was the first to witness the risen Jesus. Beyond this, Scripture reveals nothing more of me.

My Accomplishments
I was hand-picked by Jesus Christ to be a disciple.I was present with the 11 apostles in the upper room of Jerusalem after Christ ascended to heaven.
Although my accomplishments remain unknown to us today. I may simply have been overshadowed by the more prominent apostles. Even still, being named among the twelve was no small achievement.

My Weakness
Like the other disciples, James I also deserted the Lord during his trial and crucifixion.

Life Lessons
Even though I am one of the least known of the 12, it cannot not be overlooked that each of the apostles sacrificed every thing to follow Jesus. They gave up family, friends, homes, jobs, and all things familiar to answer Christ's call. These ordinary men who did extraordinary things for God, set the example for us. Every thing I did was not to get glory of fame but to be of service to my Lord and calling.

Home Town
Unknown
