I personally feel that your dreams are a reflection of how you're feeling and any struggles you are going through. There are many literary pieces where the hero has a reoccurring dream that later is somewhat foreshadowing an event in the future or providing guidance for a current struggle. Although dreams may not seem to be completely accurate, they do contain a hidden message for the hero to discover.

One omen Santiago experienced so far is himself. From the perspective of the crystal seller, Santiago was a good omen since he helped the store gain good business. It appeared as a reminder to the Crystal seller that he has yet to fulfill his personal legend. It also gave Santiago a fulfilling experience that if you fulfill your personal legend at a later stage of life when you are already content, then you will most likely be dissatisfied.

An omen that Santiago has seen in the novel thus far are the stones Urim and Thummin that he received from the King of Salem. These stones serve as "yes" and "no" answers to the questions that Santiago asks. Both stones symbolize certainty and objective knowledge. The constant presence of stones also represents the human desire to give up control and decision-making ability.

One of the omens that are important in the text is when Urim and Thummim fall out of Santiago's coat pocket when he is about to leave. At first, Santiago wants to go back to being a Shepard. The gems remind Santiago that he should continue to follow his dreams to find the hidden treasure. He can always go back to to being a shepard but he can never go back to following his dreams. It also reminds him that the king is still with him. The stones also connect with religion.
