My poem was told from the perspective of a 9 years old child worker in a textile factory, detailing the repulsive impact the Industrial Revolution had on the wellbeing of children. The horrors of the factories are described through literary devices such as euphemisms, similes, and repetition. The simile in line 5 likens the gears of the factory to mouths, which shows how these pieces of machinery crushes, or “eats”, the children. Additionally, the euphemism used in 9th line represents the usage of severe physical punishments these children faced in their everyday lives. Continuing to the following stanzas, the repetition of the word “hunger” (27) symbolizes the two types of hunger these children endured; the physical starvation from being denied food and the metaphorical longing for freedom from the factory. Lastly, a quote was taken from the diary of an actual child during the Industrial Revolution. “I don’t want to work anymore” (29) clearly displays the child’s attitude towards their working arrangements. These devices establish a somber, morose tone. The intention of this poem was to display the unspeakable work conditions of the Industrial Revolution and the toll it had on the children of the era, showing it’s negative impacts.

Red flowers of blood bloomed in the white cotton field of Lily’s bandages. The Spinning Jenny had reduced her delicate hands to lumps of gauze. According to the doctor, fatigue from lengthened work hours, and hunger from revoked lunches enabled Lily’s injury.

Anita's back ached from the rigid chair, yet she remained still. Motionless. Waiting. Her eyes drifted over to the pale, emaciated child next to her. Lily’s waxen, pallid skin matched the sheets under her. Dark circles decorated her eyes, matching the sunken hollows of her cheeks. Anita’s breath hitched in her chest. She couldn’t keep doing this.

Anita’s own childhood had been full of days under the sun, laughter during farm work, and the smile of endless grass fields. That was the life her daughter deserved. The edges of her vision blurred and a teardrop rolled down her cheek. She couldn’t send Lily back to that godforsaken factory.

But she also couldn’t afford not to. Anita’s hand absentmindedly wandered to the coin bag buried in the folds of her rough, canvas dress. She could feel the digging edges of coins through the thin fabric of the worn bag as she clenched her fist. The biting pain mingled with the feeling of dread in her stomach, dread for the endless days of hunger when one less income supported the household. Anita’s fist trembled with rage as the hard metal shards dug deeper into her pal, imprinting serial numbers and regal faces into her flesh. She had to send her back. There was no choice.

With the crunch of snapping fingers and ripping flesh, the all-consuming Spinning Jenny tore apart the pieces of Anita’s heart.

This prose was written from the perspective of a mother, Anita, who is distraught over their child, Lily’s, after she was injured, and are contemplating over whether or not to continue sending Lily to the factory where she was hurt. In this poem, I used a simile to liken blood on bandages to “red flowers [blooming] in [a] white cotton field]”. On the surface, this comparison is very graceful, but the actual subject being described is gruesome and grotesque. This contrast mimics that of the Industrial Revolution; on the surface it reaped many benefits, but the suffering workers and inhumane conditions remain overlooked. Only when we peer deeper, do we realize the grotesque beauty of the injured, bloody growth. Furthermore, the “[imprinted] serial numbers and regal faces [in Anita’s flesh]” represents the way money and capitalism has forced itself into every aspect of our lives, even our own bodies. In the end, it is revealed that the parent’s choice of sending a child to a factory does not exist. The story expresses how the Industrial Revolution had repulsive impacts on the wellbeing of individuals, and the critical role it played in the society that repeatedly values money over people.
