Modeling what effective talk looks like is a great start. Setting boundaries for other students to actively listen while someone is speaking as well. Providing and creating time when every student can contribute their thoughts. Just because a student doesn't speak much doesn't mean that they do not have much to say. Providing statements of approval after a student speaks builds confidence in that student as well. Teaching students how to pronounce words correctly and exposing them to different types of vocabulary and context to become better orators. Like one teacher said, there is always talking in the classroom but finding ways to create time for deliberate talking is necessary to increase a students speaking ability.
#MicDrop
#JEDISWAGG

Each class I have discussions with the class, sometimes they are planned discussions about what we are doing in class that day, and sometimes a discussion will arise based off something that happened in the class. I always ask the students input on what we are talking about so they are able to make a connection to that topic.

I think one way to prepare the students to increase effective talk is certainly to model it many times throughout the day. Also, I would put the sentence stems on an anchor chart, and expect them to use them. Last, I would work on how I form my small groups. Right now, they are formed randomly, but I want it to be purposeful so that all the quiet kids don't end up together just looking at each other.
