I tightened my hold on my duffel bag, looking past my best friend, beyond the patchy lawn of the schoolyard and the gangly water tower beyond that-in the direction of the interstate. With glassy, hooded eyes, Marion's glaze drifted in the same direction, which didn't surprise me one bit. Sooner or later, everyone had their eyes on the way out of Monroe."

"You gonna kiss me or what, Boudreaux?" And that was all it took. My lips pressed into hers.

Question: Why is Officer Reynaud putting so much pressure to arrest Gabby when she was not resisting?

Answer: This occured because nowadays, police brutality to different people of color is still high. A major example would be the George Floyd incident. He was getting arrested normally but the officers used too much force and ended up choking him to death. These problems still occur in our world which is why Gabby was getting arrested with her shoulder at an odd angle.
