Find out what your own biases are by taking at least two of the Unconscious Bias Tests, then share something that you learned about yourself here. What does this mean to you moving forward? What implications does this have on your own classroom? Respond to at least two of your classmates.

I realized that I have "a strong automatic preference for straight people over gay people" based on my results for one of the tests. I was somewhat surprised by this because I do try to be accommodating of all people. However, I do know that my strong Catholic beliefs do tend to get in the way sometimes and can create some bias. I was surprised to see that my results fit in with 25% of the other respondents for the test. I didn't think that so many people would fall into that category. I've realized that I do need to make some adjustments moving forward if I want to teach in the public-school setting. I want my classroom to be a welcoming environment for all students and I should work hard to create that space because right now I can see this bias that I didn't realize I had getting in the way of creating a welcoming environment for all based on sexual orientation.

After taking the test, "Your responses suggested a moderate automatic preference for Straight people over Gay people." Which I think is good considering 25% is in the strong category while I am a part of the 24% in the moderate category. I think the test did not quite show how I feel, because in all honesty, I do not care if people are gay or straight, as long as you're happy. I think the test shows that I might be a little biased and that is something I could work on.

I took the test for age and got "Your responses suggested a moderate automatic preference for Young people over Old people" I am in the 30% category to those who chose to do this test. Honestly I think it is wrong because I find myself making more friends with those older than me by a significant amount of years and there are more things in common between us then those my own age or younger. However, I guess in this case it is kind of a good thing since I want to teach high school and I will always be older than those I will be teaching. - Sarah F.

I took the test for faith (religions) and presidents, and the faith results were more interesting to me. It stated that my "responses suggested a strong automatic preference for Christianity over Islam." To be blunt, I do not disagree with this statement. Currently, I am a candidate to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation and the Eucharist (I am a protestant aspiring to be Catholic). So... of course I would strongly prefer my faith over all others. However, this does not mean I will dismiss or devalue others based on their faith or worldview. Does the result of the test suggest otherwise? If so, I find that highly aggravating and insulting. I think there is more to the human condition that the test misses. If anything, I am more interested and invested in the ways my future students learn. Which, of course, means prioritizing their educational growth and emotional well-being regardless of their background or beliefs. That is how I will operate my classroom. I want to end my response by asking a question that sort of sidetracks from the main discussion. What is the best way to drive a wedge between people? It is not being biased; instead, the answer is to focus on our differences. I believe wholeheartedly that we need to focus on our similarities and take an interest in learning and caring about each other.

I took the Gender-Career IAT. It was interesting to see my results. It said that I had a "strong automatic association for Male with Career and Female with Family." I grew up in an extremely loving home in which both of my parents were involved in my life. Both of my parents worked, although my dad would work from home so I was able to spend more time during the day with him. I didn't realize I had this bias. I would've thought it would be the other way around because I mostly saw my dad at home with my sisters and me even though he worked. It's interesting to me to see how I am most willing to associate males with careers and females since that wasn't the model I had around me growing up. I believe this is important for me to know as a future teacher because I will be teaching students who come from all kinds of different family dynamics. Some have one parent present and some live with grandparents. Either way, I as their teacher shouldn't base them or categorize them by a bias about their family's career situation, but to treat them all the same no matter their family style or dynamic at home.

Alyssa Volk

I took the weight test, I got that I have a very very strong preference with thin people. I do not disagree with this statement I have had an Eating disorder in the past and still struggle being around "fat" people. I have a pretty negative bias so I would say this test did well. I do not have any fat friends and I am very much in the fitness world so I believe the people I hang out with contributes to this as well. I feel as if I do need to get over this as clearly not everyone will be thin in highschools that I teach in and I really need to get over the stigma that I have in my brain that fat = bad. I do this actively when I serve but often I feel myself getting anxiety around them but I am hoping this does better itself in the future.

I ultimately was not surprised by this. I do have friends of all sizes, and if anything I am typically one of the smallest throughout each of my friend groups. However, I do recognize that having worked in unhealthy restaurants, I have seen many rough conditions of overweight people. I have heard that it is not true, but it has always been a stigma in my mind that people can control their weight through their habits and have often felt that overweight translates to lazy.

I took the light-skinned/dark-skinned white people test. It said I have a strong automatic response for light-skinned over dark-skinned. I do not think this is accurate.Compared to most of my family I am darker skinned than they are.

This has never bothered me. In fact I have darker skin tone than my cousin who is 1/2 African American. We always joke about me being darker. I only made two errors in the whole test and that was during the time when I had to remember that it was opposites from the time before. If this was true then I would need to be conscious of this bias to avoid it.

Brody Coblentz

I took the Transgender test and got "Your data suggest weak automatic preference for Transgender People over Cisgender People.". Which to be honest is not too surprising in my opinion. I do think I have a slight preference for trans people because I am queer myself. After having not seen or interacted with queer people for much of my life it is an automatic "Oh I know this person is safe in that regard" when I see a trans person or interact with one. It is seeing another person from the same minority as me who I can be more honest and open with as compared to cisgendered people. Ultimately I thought this would be the outcome and am not too shocked or surprised. I do think that the way it is worded makes me seem like I have a slight dislike of cigendered people but that is not the case and I think I have a good understanding of my slight bias towards trans folk.

I took the Presidential Bias Test and found that I have a "slight preference to Joe Biden over Recent Presidents." It however did not give me a percentage as it gave the rest of my classmates, but I think that there's a clear reason why one would have a preference, especially in a societal climate as this one, that would suggest that I would prefer someone who aligns with what I believe/think and although that might not always be a great thing I think in this context have a bias might cause some discourse. I also think that the test itself is set up for you to purposely chose the wrong answers by tricking the brain over which letter "e or i" represented which president. I would like to also know if they aren't giving me a percentage because of the Election and how nasty that could look, but if anyone else takes this one please let me know your results and what you think of my findings/response

I believe that I may have gotten these results based on the fact that the way the questions were presented was quite confusing and I believe that the gender associated with science and liberal arts is fairly even, in my opinion. I feel that I have witnessed split results quite frequently and do not agree with the test results given to me. I also got results saying that I associated males with careers and females with family, I can see where this result may come from as it is a stereotype for men to be out working while women stay home and care for the family, however, I do believe that men and women have the same capabilities to do both equally as well. I believe that implicating in my classroom that both men and women (or boys and girls) are very capable of doing the same things just as well is super important as well as establishing gender equality.

Gavin Cornelison

I took the Race IAT and it found that I was slightly faster at sorting white with good and black with bad compared to sorting white with bad and black with good. I think that this is in part due to subconscious biases, but I also have some thoughts on whether the results would be different if the test was run differently. I think that all people have their own subconscious biases, I don't think people should feel bad for these biases, their existence is nobodies fault in my opinion. However, I do think it should be in everyone's interest to make as much effort as possible into reducing them as much as possible. The main thing I wonder about with the test is whether the results would be different if I did the test in a different order. How the tests worked is I was given words with good connotations that I had to label good with one key, and words with bad connotations with another key, and then had black and white images of black and white people that I also had to sort through. The test then gave me both of these at the same time, having me sort white and good with the same key, and black and bad with the other key, it then swapped white and black and did it again. The main thing I am wondering is would this test have gone differently if black and good were grouped together first, since I feel most people get a feel for the test on the first round then it takes them longer to relearn the order than to learn it the first time. Again I think my own subconscious biases likely played a role in the results, but I still am curious whether the results would be different, purely with how people learn things.

My results stated "Your responses suggested little or no automatic association between Present and Past with White Americans and Native Americans." I think this means close to what I feel when thinking about it. I treat everyone the same. To me it doesn't matter your background in order for me to treat you with respect. Children especially because they don't know any better so they deserve a teacher who does not have bias against them. I want my classroom to be all inclusive. Each child is represented and understood and if I don't understand them on any level then I will learn whatever I have to in order for them to be heard.

My entire family originates from Mexico so I would often times go visit down there and although there is a pretty large population of Hispanics/Latinos in Indiana, the majority is white. But, growing up with two different sets of people, backgrounds, perspectives, etc., has allowed me to understand both sides as I know the social cues and characteristics associated with them. Going forward, I will continue to have this understanding of all backgrounds and continue to respect those backgrounds in my classroom and my life.

I took the Islam and Judaism test and got a moderate automatic preference for Islam. I decided to take this test because I was not raised in either of the religions listed so I thought it would be interesting to see what sort of unconscious biases have seeped in through time. I was surprised that the test ranked me as moderate automatic instead of slight or little to no automatic preference. The test itself got a little confusing in the last couple of stages when it switched the controls to the opposite hand and I believe that may have influenced the outcome a bit, as I got more wrong on the last two levels. While I will take the results of this test into consideration, I know that the classroom environment I plan on maintaining will be open to all types of students, regardless of their religious background. One of my favorite things to do is include all students in on various holidays taking place for cultural or religious purposes so they can understand classmates from different backgrounds. Being able to recognize religious holidays across the Abrahamic religions along with other religious groups is just one aspect of creating the inclusive classroom I strive to create.
