A figurehead, in this scenario it is the lottery is continually followed every year by all the citizens of the village. The family is first picked, and then they go through each member and whoever picks a paper with a black dot on it is stoned to death. This is used to control the population. Paragraph 77 states, "Tessie Hutchinson was in the center of a cleared space by now, and she held her hands out desperately as the villagers moved in on her. “It isn’t fair,” she said. A stone hit her on the side of the head." This shows the setting of her being stoned after she was picked by the lottery. This is like a figurehead because they all ignore their emotions and just follow what the lottery picks.

I also think they have a fear of being looked down upon if they say anything because they make fun of other villages that stopped this disgusting tradition.

And I noticed how they don't get to choose their lives after the age of 12. They are assigned something called an assignment that they will do for the rest of their lives. Jona was the boy in this book and his dad was talking to him about how he knew what his assignment was and that was a crazy thing. THis is showing that they really have no control over what they get assigned. Very restricted thoughts and freedom.

THis is one of the stories that makes me think really hard. THe amount of control the government has over the people fathumz my brain. I think that this is propaganda because everyone has to be equal. No one is prettier, smarter or anything better than each other. The government puts handicaps on the people who are too smart so that they are not better than anyone and are equal. They put masks on the girls that are too pretty.

He had outgrown hindrances faster than the H–G men could think them up. The spectacles were intended to make him not only half blind, but to give him whanging headaches besides.

Scrap metal was hung all over him.
