On October 2, 1968, thousands of students gathered for a meeting at the Plaza de la Tres Culturas, located in the residential unit of Tlatelolco. The objective of the meeting was to make known a 6-point request list to the government of Gustavo Díaz Ordaz.

At 6:10 in the afternoon, a helicopter launched a flare over the square. Then, shots began to appear from the top of the buildings. Before this, the members of the Army that guarded the concentration - a usual practice at the time - opted to repel the aggression and shot the crowd.

Before the exchange of fire, the crowd dispersed and several people sought refuge in one of the buildings surrounding the plaza. However, in the hours following the start of the massacre, military and police agents conducted searches and illegal detentions of demonstrators within several departments of Tlatelolco.

Over time, it was revealed that those who started the shooting on October 2 were members of the Olimpia Battalion, a group of federal government agents. After the initial confusion over the shooting, members of that paramilitary group and the Army coordinated to illegally detain dozens of students.
