Picture analysis 
  • Millions of Africans were captured by Europeans. 
  • The slaves were raped, enslaved, tortured, murdered, and gun downed. 
  • Everyday they worked til they where scarred, bruised, and cut.
  • Whipped by belts if something was done wrong and locked in chains daily.
  • If they were lucky they would sleep 4 hours a day 
  • They were sold in auctions, some slaves never saw their families again. 
  • They were given very little food
  • Given very little time for themselves as do to work and labor.

About King Affonso
  • King Affonso was the leader of the Congolese.
  • Initially King Affonso was cooperative with the Portuguese slave traders, letting them take lower-class citizens and prisoners of war 
  • When Europe’s demand for slaves grew, Affonso became increasingly alarmed as he saw the trade destroying his society.
  • At becoming alarmed to what was happening to his society Affonso pleads for his country in a letter to the King of Portugal.
The letter to the King of Portugal 
  • In the letter to the King of Portugal, King Affonso writes to him pleading to restore to the freemen their freedom.
  • King Affonso tells him how the white men seize many of his people including freed and exempt men; and very often kidnap noblemen and the sons of noblemen and relatives 
  • It also says how they take them to be sold and as soon as they are taken they are immediately ironed and branded with fire.
