How I define music and what it means to me

Music to me is anything that follows a rhythm using a voice and or musical instrument, whether that instrument be a person's hands banging a bucket, or strumming a guitar. Music has to make me feel something, it needs to speak to me on a level, either using lyrics or the tone of a piece in order to stir some reaction in me. Music makes me want to cry, dance, laugh, smile, fall in love, believe, and in some cases makes me want to wrinkle my nose and change the song, but no matter if it fits my personal taste, I still acknowledge the feeling it evoked from me and how someone else may enjoy what I don't. No matter what though, music should involve some level of emotion, that's what defines it for me. To me music means that I'm not alone in any situation. Music is a comfort, guide, and a way to work through really intense emotions that sometimes can be too difficult to express to another person. Music can create a larger understanding between people, I can explain to my friend what my most recent break up feels like, or I can show her a song that I resonate with in that time and feeling and allow her to go through the motion of what I'm feeling. For music to create that connection between people, for example like the large fan groups you can join online, is an amazing thing and I believe the true meaning of it. Music is created to evoke emotions and create connections between people.

My daily interaction with music

When I wake up one of the first things I do is grab my phone, find a playlist, hit start and use whatever song shuffles on as motivation to get out of my bed and get ready for my day. That sets the tone for how I use music on a regular basis, I'm constantly listening to it. Doing homework, walking to class, in the shower, reading a book, working out, eating dinner, writing this board, and every moment I'm not fully interacting with another human being the chances are I'm listening to some music. I don't like silence and as someone whose brain can be over powering with thoughts, music helps calm the overthinking and lets myself melt into whatever the music or singer is trying to say. I grew up with music on all the time, my parents being avid 80's fans, that music not being at least a backtrack in everything I do would be odd to me.

My favorite genre

My favorite music genre is alternative rock because I'm a big fan of lyrics with meaning and a heavy guitar and drum sound. Alternative rock can make me go through a large array of emotions and to me that is my favorite part of music. I don't have one mood/feeling playlist that doesn't include at least one alternative rock song in it. My oldest brother growing up was always listening to alternative rock and due to him being a large influence in my life, I just find a great sense of comfort, belonging and home with in the alternative rock genre. I feel like there is something there for everyone and its rare I find an alternative rock band where I don't like at the very least one song by them.

My music isn't really a genre, although I do have a favorite that I'll talk about in a different box. On my Spotify (the app I use to listen to all my music) instead of having playlists that list genres of music, I have playlists that list moods and feelings. So for example in my "Excuse me I just wanna dance" playlist I have songs by alternative rock bands like "Quietdrive", pop punk bands like "Sleeping with Sirens" and "5 Seconds of Summer" , rap artists like "Drake", hip hop artists like "blackbear" and of course pop artists like "Ariana Grande" and "Justin Bieber" and those are just to name a few different genres and artists that all evoke the same feeling from me, dispute their wide range of sound. What they do is make me want to dance and it doesn't matter what genre they are to me. My music is whatever makes me feel whatever it is I'm trying to feel and whatever mood I wanna listen to.
